About this resource
Three-digit addition and subtraction is where a child has to trade across two column boundaries, not just add or
subtract straight down. This is a full kit for that step: build the value with flats, rods and cubes, walk one
addition problem and one subtraction problem through the regroup, then practice both operations across five shared
formats — a stack with hundreds, tens and ones, a story problem, a cut-and-glue match and a color page — plus the
record-keeping around them. Every page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction and answer boxes a child can
write in.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (36 pages)
- 20 student pages: 17 practice pages across 5 formats (each format in both addition and subtraction), plus a
flats-rods-cubes chart and two "How to" walkthrough pages
- 33 addition problems and 33 subtraction problems (66 in total), no two alike within an operation, EVERY problem
regroups at least once (checked in code): addition answers run 230–987, subtraction answers run 118–888
- 18 numbers to build from flats, rods and cubes
- 12 cut-and-glue pieces (2 pages, 6 a page) and 16 shapes to solve and color (2 pages, 8 a page)
- 3 answer keys, made from the same data as the pages
- 1 tracker (17 pages, 84 items), 1 class progress grid
- 1 team note and 1 home page (addition and subtraction practice boxes and a worked example for a family to try)
- 1 filled example (an invented student), 1 phrase and strategy bank (17 starters), 1 binder cover and 6 divider
tabs with a spine label to cut out
- Start Here, a how-to-read-a-page page, and a "what's next" back page
THE FIVE FORMATS (addition and subtraction each)
1. Count the Value (3 pages, shared, 18 numbers): count the drawn flats, rods and cubes and write the number; the
last set also writes it as hundreds, tens and ones.
2. Add and Regroup / Subtract and Regroup (3 pages each, 30 problems): a vertical stack in hundreds, tens and ones
columns. The first two sets have column headings, the last has none.
3. Story Problems (2 pages each, 8 problems): a short story with a drawn object and a "Show your work" box.
4. Cut and Glue (1 page each, 12 pieces): match each problem to its answer, then glue.
5. Add / Subtract and Color (1 page each, 16 shapes): solve the problem in each of 8 shapes, then color it by a
color-coded range of the answer's hundreds digit.
Dots at the top right of each page (not words) show the level: one dot starting, two building, three ready for
more.
Regroups, On Purpose
Every problem in the file needs at least one trade: the ones digits add to 10 or more (or subtract short), or the
tens digits do once the ones are traded. That is checked in code for every problem before it is used anywhere in
the file, and every block picture is checked too: the flats drawn equal the hundreds digit, the rods equal the tens
digit, the cubes equal the ones digit.
Built For The Child Holding The Page
A big "My name" line, one short instruction with a picture, large rounded numbers and boxes at least half an inch
tall. Nothing on a student page is written for an adult. The flats, rods, cubes and counting pictures are all drawn
by us; there are no scores and no timers on the student pages.
Type In, Or Print
The name and date lines, the answer boxes, the tracker, the class grid, the team note and the home page are type-in
fields in any PDF reader. Every page also prints cleanly in black and white. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a
Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
Second and third grade classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, and any teacher working with an older student
who still needs the trade shown with blocks before moving to numbers alone. The home page sends the same job to a
family; the team note hands off what changed since the last meeting.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
Three-digit addition and subtraction practice, with regrouping, and the record-keeping around it. It is not a
probe, a goal bank or a score sheet, and it makes no claim about any student's age or rate of progress.
