About this resource
Finding a missing addend within 20, dressed for Valentine's Day, on pages a child can pick up and start.
Count the empty boxes in a heart-dressed ten-frame, hop a number line between a ring and a flag, fill a plain
equation, or turn a fact around — the blank is always one of the two numbers being added, never the total.
Every page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction, and answer boxes made for a child's handwriting.
Untimed: no clock, no score on the page.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (32 pages: 16 student pages, 16 for you)
- 70 different missing-addend facts, sums from 3 to 20, all computed in code; each fact appears on exactly one student page
- Show Me: one missing addend shown four ways (count the gap, number line, fill the box, turn it around), then a Your turn row where the child picks two numbers that make the same total (1 page)
- Count the Gap: a heart-dressed ten-frame holds the known addend with a drawn heart counter; the rest of the frame is empty and dashed for the child to count (10 problems, 2 pages)
- Fill the Box: After — plain equations, known + box = total, the blank always the SECOND addend (15 problems, 3 pages)
- Fill the Box: Before — plain equations, box + known = total, the blank always the FIRST addend (11 problems, 2 pages)
- Hop to Find It: a 0 to 20 number line rings the start and flags the end; the hops are printed as a scaffold on the first page, drawn by the child on the second, and left to find on the third (11 problems, 3 pages)
- Turn It Around: the same two numbers shown both orders, two boxes to fill on every row (11 problems, 3 pages)
- Cut and Glue: six pieces a page, 3 by 2, three straight cuts; numbers glued to equations on the first page, equations glued to numbers on the second (12 pieces, 2 pages)
- A fact map showing every one of the 90 possible facts and which page carries it, 2 answer keys, a tracker, a class grid, a team note, a home page with a printed number line and blank equations for the family to fill in, a filled example (an invented student), a phrase and strategy bank (17 starters), a binder cover and 6 divider tabs with a spine label
- Start Here, a how-it-works page and a "What's next" back page
Built For The Child, Not The Office
Every student page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction with a picture (a pencil or scissors),
rounded boxes at least half an inch tall, and plenty of room. Fill the Box: After, level 3, adds a "My work"
box. Everything for you (directions, answer keys, scoring) is on separate teacher pages.
Three Levels, Marked By Dots
One dot: starting (totals stay small, a ten-frame or a scaffold line is always on the page). Two dots:
building. Three dots: ready for more (bigger totals, draw your own hops, show your work, glue the equations to
the numbers). The dots are the only level code, so children at one table are not comparing papers.
Every Fact Is Computed
Every answer, every empty cell, every hop and every row of both answer keys is read from the same pair of
numbers that draws the page. There is no second, hand-typed key. A fact is the unordered pair of addends, so
showing 7 as the known number with 5 missing on one page, and 5 known with 7 missing on another, would still
be the same fact — blocked in code, not just by eye.
Type In, Or Print
The name and date lines, every answer box, the tracker, class grid, team note and home page are type-in
fields in any PDF reader; the pictures, number lines, ten-frames and cut pieces are always printed. Every
page also prints clean in black and white. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides, Google Docs or
PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
First and second grade teachers, special education and resource room teachers, interventionists, and anyone
stocking a February math center who needs missing-addend practice at more than one level in one file, with
the tracking and family pages already made.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
An untimed missing-addend practice set with the record-keeping around it, dressed for Valentine's Day. It is
not a timed fluency probe or a goal page, not a full math curriculum, and not a claim about any student's age,
grade level or rate of progress. No page asks for a total; this is not a "find the sum" addition-practice
file.
