About this resource
24 original reading passages for second grade: 12 short stories and 12 fact pages. Every passage is on its own page with 5 questions (2 multiple choice, 3 short answer) and a Prove it box where the child copies the words from the page that back up an answer. It comes with 3 answer keys, a tracker for one child, a class tracker and a star chart, so there is nothing to make yourself.

How To Use It
Pick a page. The child reads it, circles or types a letter for questions 1 and 2, writes the answers to questions 3, 4 and 5, then copies the words that prove the answer to question 4. Check with the key, write the scores on the tracker, and let the child color a star. If you like a routine, the how-to page suggests five days with one passage: read together, read alone and answer 1 and 2, answer 3 to 5, prove it, check and record.
What The Passages Are
Short stories about everyday things: a paper boat, a garden hat, a shy kitten, a lunch swap, a surprise party, a night camping in the backyard. The fact pages cover seeds, penguins, owls, rainbows, the moon, frogs, recycling paper, camels, spiders, sea turtles, giraffes, and ice and steam. Every passage was written for this file. There are no real people, no characters you will recognize from a book or a show, and no quotation marks.
What Is Not Included
There are no norms, no target scores and no reading levels in the file: it never says what a score should be or what level a passage is. It is not a screener, a placement test or a clinical tool, and it says nothing about any child's age or rate of progress. What counts as a right answer and how much proof is enough are blank lines for you to fill in with your own rules.
Built For The Child Holding The Page
A big "My name" line, one short instruction, large rounded type, and answer boxes tall enough for a child to write in. The answer choices are printed as A, B and C with a letter box. The file prints clean in black and white.
Type In, Or Print
The name line, every answer box, the letter boxes, the trackers, the team note and the home page are type-in fields in any PDF reader: click one, type, then save. The same pages print and write by hand. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
Teachers of second grade, reading groups, resource rooms and self-contained classrooms, reading centers, homework folders, home practice, and substitute plans.
What To Pair It With
Fluency Graph Editable (a longer record of words per minute, a goal page and a family letter), History of Thanksgiving Worksheets (reading passages and a timeline for 2nd to 5th grade) and Christmas Around the World Worksheets (reading, compare and sort pages for grades 2 to 4) are in the store.
