About this resource

Four-digit addition and subtraction with regrouping is where a lot of third and fourth graders slow down: one forgotten carry, one skipped trade, and the whole answer is off. This is a complete kit for that one skill. Children carry and trade in place-value boxes, then add it, subtract it, mix it up, check their answer with the opposite operation, spot the mistake in a finished problem, solve word problems with a big work box, and cut and glue answers. It comes with answer keys, a tracker, a class grid and a family page, so nothing has to be written from scratch.

EVERYTHING INSIDE (33 pages)

The Page Types, Easiest First

1. Look (1 dot): 3,468 + 1,759 and 5,203 - 2,478, worked in place-value boxes with the carried 1s and the traded numbers shown.

2. Add It A (1 dot): four problems where exactly one place makes a ten, with a small carry box above each place and labeled columns.

3. Add It B (2 dots): two or three places carry. Carry boxes stay.

4. Add It C (3 dots): the same kind of problem with no carry boxes.

5. Subtract It A (1 dot): one place has to trade, with a small box above each top digit to cross out and write the new number.

6. Subtract It B (2 dots): two or three places trade. Trade boxes stay.

7. Subtract It C (3 dots): a zero in the top number, so the trade goes across it. No helper boxes.

8. Mix It Up (2 dots): two adds and two subtracts in one page. Look at the sign first.

9. Check It A and B (2 and 3 dots): solve, copy the answer on top, then use the opposite operation. Does it give back the number you started with? Three problems a page.

10. Spot the Mistake A and B (2 and 3 dots): a finished problem in shaded boxes. Circle yes or no, then write the right answer. Four items a page.

11. Word Problems A, B and C (2, 2 and 3 dots): stories that add, stories that subtract, and one of each. Two stories to a page, a 1.5-inch "Show your work" box under each, then answer boxes.

12. Cut and Glue A and B (2 and 3 dots): six answers to cut out and glue by their problems. The six pieces touch edge to edge, so cutting is three straight lines.

Built For The Child Holding The Page

A big "My name" line, one short instruction, large rounded type, big answer boxes (one box for each digit), and dots (not words or colors) to show which level a page is. Nothing on a student page is written for an adult. The place-value boxes are drawn for this file, and every page reads clearly in black and white.

Checked In Code, Not By Hand

Every answer, every carry, every trade and every wrong answer on Spot the Mistake is worked out by the same code that draws the page. The answer keys list the places that regrouped in every problem. On both Cut and Glue pages no piece sits directly under its own cell, so cutting straight across never gives the answer.

Type In, Or Print

The name line and every answer box are type-in fields in any PDF reader: click one, type, then save. The same goes for the tracker, the class grid, the team note and the home page. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.

Who This Is For

Third and fourth grade classrooms, resource rooms and self-contained classrooms, math centers, small groups, homework folders and morning work. The directions are short, and the teacher can read each page aloud.

What This Is, And What It Is Not

A four-digit regrouping worksheet set with the record-keeping around it. Sums stay under 10,000 and every difference is a four-digit number. It has no timer and no scoring on a student page, and it is not a timed test, a screener, a clinical tool, or a claim about any student's age or rate of progress. There is no IEP goal language or eligibility wording anywhere in the file.
