About this resource
Addition within 20, on pages a child can pick up and start. Hop on along a number line, count on, add two drawn groups in ten-frames, find a missing part, spot a mistake, or cut and glue. Every page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction, and answer boxes made for a child's handwriting. Untimed: no clock, no score on the page.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (32 pages: 16 student pages, 16 for you)
- 49 different addition facts, sums from 6 to 20, all computed in code; each fact appears on exactly one student page
- Ways to Add: one fact shown four ways (count on, number line, ten-frame, turn it around), then a Your turn row where the child writes a fact and turns it around (1 page)
- Number Line Hops: a 0 to 20 number line with a tick and a numeral at every number; hops are printed, or the child draws them, or counts them to find the missing number (9 problems, 3 pages)
- Count On: write each number you say counting on, 1 to 3 steps (7 problems, 2 pages)
- Ten-Frame Add: 108 drawn pictures in two ten-frames, two different pictures for the two numbers, to count all, to write the addition from, or with room to draw the second group and a "My work" box (8 problems, 3 pages)
- Missing Part: a bar of two parts and a whole, a ten-frame under the bar on the first page, and an equation with the missing part to write (7 problems, 3 pages)
- Fix It: a printed answer that is right on 2 rows and wrong on 4; circle yes or no and write the right answer (6 problems, 2 pages)
- Cut and Glue: six pieces a page, 3 by 2, three straight cuts; answers to facts on the first page, facts to answers on the second (12 pieces, 2 pages)
- A fact map showing every fact in the file and which page it is on, 2 answer keys (24 rows and 25 rows), a tracker, a class grid, a team note, a home page with a printed number line and blank equations for the family to fill in, a filled example (an invented student), a phrase and strategy bank (17 starters), a binder cover and 6 divider tabs with a spine label
- Start Here, a how-it-works page and a "What's next" back page
Built For The Child, Not The Office
Every student page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction with a picture (a pencil, a book, a circle or scissors), rounded boxes at least half an inch tall, and plenty of room. Ten-Frame Add C and Missing Part C add a "My work" box. Everything for you (directions, answer keys, scoring) is on separate teacher pages.
Three Levels, Marked By Dots
One dot: starting (hops are printed, the pictures for both numbers are printed, a ten-frame under the missing part, a faint answer in the glue box). Two dots: building. Three dots: ready for more (count the hops yourself, draw the second group, show your work, glue the facts to the answers). The dots are the only level code, so children at one table are not comparing papers.
Every Fact Is Computed
Every answer, every hop, every picture, every wrong answer on Fix It and every row of both answer keys is read from the same pair of numbers that draws the page. There is no second, hand-typed key. Every wrong answer on Fix It is one more, one fewer, or ten fewer, so a child gets it right by checking, not by guessing "no." The facts are ones where a child naturally counts on: the two numbers are at least 2 apart and neither is 10, so doubles, near doubles and ten-plus-a-number are not in this file.
Type In, Or Print
The name and date lines, every answer box, the tracker, class grid, team note and home page are type-in fields in any PDF reader; the pictures, number lines, ten-frames and cut pieces are always printed. Every page also prints clean in black and white. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides, Google Docs or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
First grade teachers, special education and resource room teachers, interventionists, and anyone who needs addition practice at more than one level in one file, with the tracking and family pages already made.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
An untimed addition practice set with the record-keeping around it. It is not a timed fluency probe or a goal page, not a full math curriculum, and not a claim about any student's age, grade level or rate of progress. Sums run from 6 to 20, so this is not an addition-within-10 file.
