About this resource
Where does a camel live? A shark? A lemming? This is a complete kit for K-2 animal habitats, and every animal is a word, so a child reads, thinks and decides. Five habitats (desert, ocean, forest, arctic and pond), 30 animals, six page types, and cut-and-glue sort mats. It comes with a tracker, a class grid and a family update, so nothing has to be written from scratch.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (27 pages)
- 12 student pages in 6 page types: Habitat Words, Circle the Home, Match It, Odd One Out, Write It, and Cut and Glue
- 66 scored items on 10 pages, every answer read from the same data that prints the page
- 34 cut-and-glue word pieces on 4 sort mats (two mats with 8 words in two homes, two mats with 9 words in three homes)
- 2 answer keys
- 1 tracker (page, page type, items right, date) and 1 whole-class progress grid
- 1 team note (a hand-off page between team meetings) and 1 home page (say an animal, say where it lives)
- 1 filled example (an invented student), 1 phrase bank (16 observable-language starters), 1 binder cover and 6 divider tabs with a spine label to cut out
- Start Here and a how-to-read-a-page page
The Page Types, Easiest First
1. Habitat Words (starting): the five habitats with clue words ("dry and sandy," "salty water," "lots of trees," "snow and ice," "small, still water"), two example animals each, and a sentence to say: "A ___ lives in the ___."
2. Circle the Home, 2 pages (1 or 2 dots): read the animal, circle where it lives. Set A has three choices; set B has all five habitats on every animal.
3. Match It, 2 pages (1 or 2 dots): six animals, five lettered habitats, write the letter. Set A shows clue words beside each habitat; set B does not.
4. Odd One Out, 2 pages (2 or 3 dots): four animals, three live in the same place and one lives somewhere else. Set A circles it; set B also writes where the other three live, from a five-word bank.
5. Write It (3 dots): pick a habitat, write three animals, draw the habitat in a big box and finish a sentence.
6. Cut and Glue, 4 pages (1 to 3 dots): a big sort mat with a labeled box for each habitat, and a block of word pieces that touch edge to edge, so cutting is a few straight lines.
Built For The Child Holding The Page
A big "My name" line, one short instruction, large rounded type, big answer boxes, and dots (not words or colors) to show which level a page is. Nothing on a student page is written for an adult. There are no pictures to cut out or color, and every page prints clean in black and white.
No Guessing The Answer
Wherever a child picks among printed spots (the circled choice, the match letter, which of four animals is the odd one, the order of the words on the cut strip), the position of the right answer is checked so it does not sit in the same spot three times in a row. Each animal was chosen because one of the five habitats is its clear home, so every item has one right answer. Real animals can live in more than one place, and the key page says so.
Type In, Or Print
The name line and every answer box are type-in fields in any PDF reader: click one, type, then save. The same goes for the tracker, the class grid, the team note and the home page. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
