Ask 3 Before Me Posters

About this resource

When a child is stuck, the first move should not be to call out. This is a set of Ask 3 Before Me posters and desk cards that show the steps with pictures: try it myself, ask a friend, ask another friend, and then ask the teacher. Print the posters for the wall, hand each child a desk card, and let children check themselves.

WHAT IS INCLUDED (26 pages in the PDF)

• 5 posters in color: one all-steps poster, plus one full-page poster for each of the 4 steps.
• The same 5 posters in ink-saver: one full-page all-steps poster and the 4 single-step posters as half-page posters, two to a page.
• 8 desk cards on a sheet, cut edge to edge so each cut is one straight line: 4 Ask 3 Before Me steps cards and 4 Ask a Good Question cards. The sheet is in the PDF in color and in ink-saver.
• 4 student pages: My Ask 3 Check (color a circle for each step, cut out and glue a star on a day all the steps were tried), Put the Steps in Order (6 pictures to cut and glue), Ask a Good Question (4 sentence starters with room to finish each one), and Who Can I Ask? (write the helpers' names and tick ways to try it first).
• 19 pieces to cut per printing: 8 desk cards, 5 star stickers and 6 order pieces.
• Teacher pages: Start Here with a which-page-when table, how to use it in 5 short routines with an answer key, a tally (14 rows), a weekly roll-up with a bar graph, a filled example (an invented class and an invented child), a note home, a hand-off page for a sub or another room, a phrase bank of 20 starters in 5 groups, and a binder cover with spine and 4 tabs.

How To Use It

Hang the all-steps poster, or hang the four single-step posters in a row where children work. Teach one step at a time: show the picture, say the step, let two children act it out. Give each child a desk card, point to the poster before you answer a question, and let children check themselves on My Ask 3 Check. Make a row on the tally each time a question comes to you, total the week on the roll-up, and send the note home.

Every student page has a big "My name" line, one short direction with a picture, and room to color, write, cut or glue. Pictures are friendly and clear, and everything reads in black and white too.

Type In, Or Print

The name lines, the helper names, the tally, the roll-up, the note home, the hand-off page and every notes area are type-in fields in any PDF reader. The posters and desk cards are print pages. You can also print any page and write by hand. Print at 100 percent with fit-to-page turned off. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.

What This Is, And What It Is Not

Classroom posters and working paper. It is not a curriculum, a therapy program or a behavior plan, and it makes no health claims. A step is a calm reminder, not a consequence. Your school decides its own next steps; the hand-off page gives you a blank to write them in your school's words.
