About this resource
A child who can pick the right blend out of three choices is not automatically a child who can
spell it with no choices printed. This gives both jobs their own page, for the six beginning L
blends — bl, cl, fl, gl, pl, sl — plus a Mixed L Blends review: say the picture, circle the two
letters you hear, then write the two letters that start the word.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (27 pages)
- 14 practice pages — 6 beginning L blends plus 1 mixed review, x 2 formats each: Circle It
(three letter choices, all of them other L blends) and Write It (the rest of the word is
printed, write the missing two letters)
- 14 pictured words, checked against two independent icon sets (Google Noto and Microsoft Fluent
High Contrast) so a wrong picture never becomes a wrong answer key — no repeats across any blend
- 1 tracker (one student, all six blends) and 1 class roll-up grid, type-in or print
- 1 team note page and 1 home-practice page
- 1 filled example, 1 phrase bank, 1 binder cover with a spine label and three divider tabs
- Start Here, a how-to-read-a-page key with a worked example of both formats, and a contents page
that gives every page number, plus a gallery of all 14 pictured words
The Two Formats, Every Blend
1. Circle It (recognition) — a picture and three letter-cluster choices underneath, all of them
other L blends. Say the word, listen for the blend, circle the one you hear.
2. Write It (production) — the same picture, the rest of the word printed, the blend left blank.
Say the word, write the two missing letters.
Every blend here begins the word, so "Starts with" prints above every tile — where to listen is
never a guess. No student page carries the word "Level."
The Six Beginning L Blends
bl, cl, fl, gl, pl, sl — all beginning blends, plus a Mixed L Blends review that reuses one
flagship picture from each blend for discrimination practice. A picture is only used where it
names one thing and nothing else — a wrong picture is a wrong answer key — so bl (one safe
pictured word) and gl and pl (two each) carry fresh "Try 1 / Try 2…" repetitions of that same real
word instead of a mostly blank page; cl, fl and sl each have three. Page 5 lists exactly how many
pictured words are in each blend.
Type In, Or Print
The name and date lines, the tracker, the class grid, the team note and the home page are type-in
fields in any PDF reader. The circles and the letters a student writes are always pencil work.
This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
Kindergarten and first-grade classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, and any teacher moving
a student from recognizing a beginning blend to spelling it. The home page sends the same job to a
family; the team note hands off what changed since the last meeting.
