About this resource
Kind words feel good. Unkind ones hurt. This is a short picture story a student can turn like a book, pages to circle kind or unkind, and a set of picture cards that show what a student can do: say stop, use a strong voice, walk away, tell a grown-up they trust. It comes with a page where the student writes who they can tell, and the log that writes down what happened, so the lesson does not stay a nice idea on a shelf. Made for grades 1-4.
EVERYTHING INSIDE — 34 pages
- An 8-page picture story: one big picture and one short sentence on each page, a "My name" line and one instruction at the top of every page. A student meets something unkind, says "Stop. I do not like that.", walks away and tells a grown-up they trust
- The whole story on one black-and-white page, for the photocopier
- 2 "Kind or Unkind?" pages: 16 pictured actions (ask someone to play, share the markers, call someone a name, leave someone out and more); the student circles kind or unkind
- "My Kind Words and Kind Actions": the student draws and writes a kind thing to say and a kind thing to do
- 8 speak up cards in full color, cut apart 4 across and 2 down so each cut is one straight line: say stop, strong voice, walk away, tell a teacher, ask to play, kind words, be a friend, slow breath. Each has a picture, a word and a short line in the student's voice
- The same 8 speak up cards in black-and-white ink-saver
- 8 blank cards: the student draws a picture and writes the words on type-in lines
- My Trusted Grown-Ups: the student writes who they can tell at school, at home and somewhere else, and where to find them
- My Speak Up Plan: the student picks three cards and draws or writes them in order
- A how-to page with the kind-or-unkind answers for the teacher
- A Speak Up Practice Log (20 rows: date, what happened in your words, card used, told a trusted adult, initials)
- A weekly roll-up (8 weeks) with a percent graph
- A filled example: an invented student, one week on the log, three weeks on the roll-up and the cards used across all three
- A family page with six small cards to cut apart and a note home
- A hand-off page so a paraprofessional or another classroom uses the same cards the same way, with a blank line for your school's own reporting steps
- A phrase bank: 23 lines in 6 groups (spoken lines for the story and the cards, written starters for the log, the roll-up and the note home)
- A storage and binder label sheet: 12 labels and a spine strip
- Start Here, a contents page, and a "what's next" back page
The Speak Up Cards
Eight pictured cards the student can pick from. Keep them in a pocket, on a ring or at the desk. Use a blank card for any idea that is not printed here.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
It is a fillable PDF: type into the name lines, the log, the roll-up, the trusted grown-ups page, the family page, the hand-off page and the blank cards, or print and use a pen. It works offline with no account or subscription. It is NOT an editable online slideshow or word-processor document.
Who This Is For
Teachers and paraprofessionals in grades 1-4 and special education classrooms who want a calm, concrete picture lesson on kind and unkind words and actions, case managers who need it to show up as data, and the families who get the home page.
