About this resource
A calm down corner works best when children can see their choices. This is 36 pages: a Calm Down Corner sign, 16 calming strategy posters, breathing cards and calm choice cards to cut, a choice board, self-check pages for children, and the teacher pages to set it all up. Print what you need, or type into the pages first.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (36 pages)
- 1 Calm Down Corner sign with 4 steps: stop, breathe, pick a calm choice, come back when I am ready.
- 16 calming strategy posters. Each has one picture, a short label (take five breaths, squeeze a stress ball, stretch up high, drink some water, count to ten, listen to quiet music, draw a picture, ask for a hug, ask for space, blow a pinwheel, hug a soft toy, read a book, jump it out, do a puzzle, think of a happy place, wash your hands) and one line in kid words.
- 6 breathing cards to cut (smell the flower, blow the candle, blow a bubble, fill the balloon, trace your hand, spin the pinwheel), in color and in ink-saver.
- 12 calm choice cards to cut, in color and in ink-saver, and a choice board where each child glues the 4 choices they pick.
- 36 pieces to cut in all (18 in color, 18 in ink-saver), set edge to edge so each cut is one straight line.
- 2 self-check pages for children, a circle level (circle a face, circle a choice) and a square level (write and draw), each with 5 faces.
- Teacher pages: how to set up the corner (with a simple wall plan), how to teach it in 5 short routines, a visit log, a weekly tally, a filled example week (an invented class), a family letter, a phrase bank of 20 starters in 5 groups, and a binder cover with spine and 4 tabs.
- Terms of use and a thank-you page.
How To Use It
Hang the sign and the posters you want at children's eye level. Cut the cards, put them in a basket, and teach one strategy a day while everyone is calm. Children can glue four choices on their board, circle how their body feels, and pick a choice to try. Write each visit on the log, count the week on the tally, and send the family letter home.
Built For The Child Holding The Page
Every student page has a big "My name" line, one short direction with a picture, and room to circle, write or draw. The pictures are friendly and simple, drawn to be read at a glance. Cut pages come in a color set and an ink-saver set, and everything reads in black and white too.
Type In, Or Print
The name lines, the self-check pages, the visit log, the tally, the family letter and every notes area are type-in fields in any PDF reader. You can also print any page and write by hand. Print at 100 percent with fit-to-page turned off. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
PreK to 5th grade classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, and anyone who wants a calm corner children can read and use.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
Classroom posters and working paper. It is not a curriculum, a therapy program or a behavior plan, and it makes no health claims. Your school decides its own rules for the corner; the setup page gives you blanks to write them.
