About this resource
Is it a c or a k? The Cat-Kite Rule gives children one thing to look at: the letter after the /k/ sound.
Cat, cup and cow start with **c** (c before a, o, u). Kite, key and kid start with **k** (k before e, i).
This pack teaches that rule with a poster and then practices it six ways, with a picture on every child page.
WHAT IS INCLUDED (39 pages)
How To Use It
1. Post the poster (page 7). Say the picture, then look at the letter after the first sound.
2. Start with Sort It, then a center with the Sort Cards and Sort Mat.
3. Move through Circle It, Write It, Spell It and Read It, then Match It, Sound Boxes and Write a Sentence. The
dots by the name line show how much support a page gives; no page says "Level."
4. Check with the answer key, record on the tracker, roll the group up on the class grid, and send home page 34.
Page Types
Circle It: the picture, the word with a gap, two letter chips (c and k). Write It: the same word with one big
box, about 0.7 in tall. Spell It: one box per letter, about 0.9 in tall. Read It: the word is printed and the
child circles the picture; every picture starts with the /k/ sound, so the whole word has to be read. Match It:
a sentence on the left, a picture on the right. Sound Boxes: one box for each sound's letters. Sort It, Sort
Cards and the divider tabs are cut-and-paste or cut-and-sort.
Type In, Or Print
The name and date lines, the tracker, the class grid, the team note and the home page are type-in fields in
any PDF reader. The sorting, circling and writing are pencil work, and the cutting pages print on plain paper.
This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
Kindergarten and first-grade classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, centers and small groups, and any
teacher whose student is ready for c and k at the start of a word. Your district's or program's scope and
sequence decides when.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
Cat-Kite Rule practice paper with the record-keeping around it. It teaches c before a, o, u and k before e, i for
the /k/ sound at the start of a word, and nothing else: no other spelling of /k/ and no other position in a
word. It is not a reading assessment and not a claim about any student's age or rate of progress. The invented
student in the example is labeled as invented.
