About this resource
Topic, main idea, central message: three ideas children mix up all year, and now the wall can show the difference. This is 32 pages: 6 posters, 16 short stories to cut and sort, stem cards that start the sentence for the child, desk cards, three story detective pages, and the teacher pages behind them. Print what you need, or type before you print.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (32 pages)
- 6 full-page posters: central message, main idea, topic, all three side by side with two worked examples, how to find the central message in 4 steps, and 8 lesson words to look for.
- 16 original short stories (2 to 4 sentences each), written for this product. Children cut them out and sort them into 4 lesson boxes: keep trying, tell the truth, work together, be kind. 8 stories per set, 2 of each lesson, on 1 sort mat.
- 8 stem cards to cut and finish, such as "The author wants me to learn that..." and "A clue in the story is...", each with writing lines.
- 4 desk cards (topic, main idea, central message, find the lesson), 8 to a page.
- 64 pieces to cut across 8 cut sheets, edge to edge so each cut is one straight line. Every cut set comes in color and in ink-saver.
- Story detective in 3 levels, marked with a circle, a square and a triangle: circle the lesson, finish the sentences, or answer all four parts (topic, main idea, central message, a clue).
- A story log (7 rows) and a write-your-own-story page.
- Teacher pages: how to use it (5 short routines), an answer key, a class roll-up with a filled example (an invented class of 6), a family letter, a take-home "Story Talk at Home" page, a phrase bank of 20 starters in 5 groups, and a binder cover with spine and 4 tabs.
- Terms of use and a thank-you page.
How To Use It
Hang the posters and read one a day, using the side-by-side poster to ask: topic, main idea or central message? Children cut a set of 8 story cards, read each one, sort them by lesson on the mat, say the lesson with a stem card, then glue. Hand out the detective page that fits each child, check with the key, and mark the class roll-up.
Built For The Child Holding The Page
Every student page has a big "My name" line, one short direction with a picture, and room to write. Pictures are friendly clip art. Cut pages come in a color set and an ink-saver set, and everything reads in black and white too.
Type In, Or Print
The name lines, stem cards, story log, detective pages, class roll-up, family letter and every notes area are type-in fields in any PDF reader (184 fields in all). You can also print any page and write by hand. Print at 100 percent with fit-to-page turned off. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
Grade 2 to 4 classrooms, resource rooms and small groups that are learning to say the lesson of a story in their own words.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
Working paper and room decoration. It is not a curriculum, a test or a leveled reading program, and it promises no outcome.
