About this resource
What is this character like, and how do you know? This is a character traits graphic organizer kit for 1st and 2nd grade: trait webs, "I know ___ is ___ because" sentence frames, and cut-and-glue pages, all on pages a child can read, write on and cut. Every story shows a trait by what the character does and never names it, so the child finds the proof first and picks the word second.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (29 pages)
- 13 student pages in 6 page types, each with a big "My name" line and one short instruction
- 12 trait words with a kid-friendly clue each: brave, shy, funny, curious, gentle, grumpy, clever, proud, patient, friendly, bossy, hardworking
- 3 invented short stories for trait webs, and 9 invented mini stories for the sentence frames
- 18 action pieces across 3 cut-and-glue pages (6 a page, 3 trait boxes, edge to edge in a 3-by-2 grid)
- 3 answer keys generated from the same stories and card banks as the pages, plus criteria for the pages where a child makes up the answer
- 1 tracker (12 rows), 1 class grid, 1 team note, 1 home page, 1 filled example (an invented student), 1 phrase bank (20 starters)
- 1 binder cover and divider tabs (5 tabs plus a spine label) that drop straight into a classroom binder
- Start Here, a how-to-read-a-page page, and a back page
THE PAGE TYPES (dots show the level, never color)
1. Trait Words Helper (1 dot) — twelve trait words with a clue each and one model sentence
2. Read and Make a Trait Web (1 dot, 3 pages) — read a short story, pick two trait words, write the proof
3. I Know They Are, Because (2 dots, 3 pages) — three mini stories a page, finish the sentence
4. Cut and Glue: Who Is It? (2 dots, 3 pages) — cut six actions and glue each into its trait box
5. Character Web: My Book (2 dots) — a three-spoke web for a book the child knows
6. Plan My Character and Write About a Character (3 dots, 2 pages) — draw a character, pick traits, write the proof
Built For The Child Holding The Page
A big "My name" line, one short instruction, large rounded letters, and space to write. Nothing on a student page is written for an adult. Cutting is limited to Cut and Glue: 6 pieces a page in a 3-by-2 grid, edge to edge, each wide enough to read and glue.
Type In, Or Print
The name and date lines, the tracker, the class grid, the team note and the home page are type-in fields in any PDF reader. The lines a student writes on are pencil work. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
1st and 2nd grade classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, and any teacher working with an older student who still needs this skill. The home page sends a character-talk routine to a family; the team note hands off what changed since the last meeting.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
Character-trait practice with the record-keeping around it. It is not a probe, a goal bank or a score sheet, not a reading assessment, and not a claim about any student's age or rate of progress. All characters are invented. Any trait word that fits a child's proof counts; the keys show the expected one.
