About this resource
A compound word is two small words joined with no space to make one new word. This is a Christmas/winter-dressed compound words kit for first and second grade: a child builds two tiles into a word, splits a word back into its two parts, matches halves, cuts and glues, fixes a sentence, and picks the right word for a sentence — eight page types, easiest to hardest, all plain word tiles (no pictures, so nothing can be "wrong" because of an unclear picture).
EVERYTHING INSIDE (30 pages)
- 13 student pages in 8 page types (below), each with a big "My name" line and one short instruction
- 66 compound words in the practice bank, every one exactly two words a child can read, used on exactly one practice page apiece (no word repeats on a second page anywhere in the file)
- 66 practice items across Build It, Match the Halves, Split It and Glue It (12 each) plus Fix It (6) and Use It (12)
- 18 different invented sentences (Fix It and Use It), all short and all different from each other
- 12 cut-and-glue words (2 pages, six words a page) in a 3-by-2 block that takes 3 straight cuts
- 1 word list with every practice word and its split, 3 answer keys generated from the same table the pages are built from
- 1 tracker, 1 class progress grid, 1 team note, 1 home page, 1 filled example (an invented student), 1 phrase bank (17 starters)
- 1 binder cover and 6 cut-out divider tabs plus a spine label, to organize this resource in a teacher binder
- Start Here, a how-to-read-a-page page, and a back page pointing to more resources from the store
THE EIGHT PAGE TYPES (dots show the level, never color)
1. Compound Word Helper (1 dot) — three built examples and one split, in kid words
2. Build It (1 dot, 2 pages) — two tiles and a plus sign; trace the new word
3. Match the Halves (1 dot, 2 pages) — draw a line to join two words into one word
4. Split It (2 dots, 2 pages) — write the two small words on primary handwriting lines
5. Glue It (2 dots, 2 pages) — cut six words from a 3-by-2 block, glue each beside its first word
6. Fix It (2 dots, 1 page) — two underlined words are printed apart; write them as one word
7. Use It (3 dots, 2 pages) — pick the word from a word box that fits the sentence
8. My Words (3 dots, 1 page) — write a sentence with each of three words and draw a picture
Words come in sets of six (A, B); no two pages anywhere in the file share a word — not even the Helper, My Words and Home pages, which use their own separate words so nothing in the file repeats.
Built For The Child Holding The Page
A big "My name" line, one short instruction with a small icon, large rounded letters, and primary handwriting lines (a top line, a dashed middle line, a baseline) at least 0.66in tall. Nothing on a student page is written for an adult — the level shows as one, two or three small dots, never a word or a color. Glue It is the only cutting page: 6 pieces in a 3-by-2 grid, edge to edge, each at least 1.1in on every side, 3 straight cuts.
Type In, Or Print
The name line, the tracker, the class grid, the team note, the home page and the word-list note box are type-in fields in any PDF reader. The lines a student draws (tracing, splitting, writing a sentence) are pencil work. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
First and second grade classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, and any older student still building this skill, with a Christmas/winter theme for a December unit. The home page sends three practice prompts to a family; the team note hands off what changed since the last meeting, with blanks for your program's own wording.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
Compound-word practice with the record-keeping around it, dressed for the season. It is not a probe, a goal bank or a score sheet, not a writing assessment, and not a claim about any student's age or rate of progress. Example students (Maya, Ms. Patel) are invented; no health or identifying information is pre-filled anywhere.
