About this resource
Teach when to spell /k/ with c, k or ck, with one picture each: the cat takes a, o and u, the kite takes i and e, and the duck ends a short-vowel word. This is 23 pages: big rule posters for your wall, word cards to cut and sort, a sort mat, fill-in pages and desk strips so the rule stays close. Print what you need, or type into the pages first.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (23 pages)
- 3 big rule posters, one to a page: c takes a, o, u (the cat), k takes i, e (the kite), and ck ends a short-vowel word (the duck, with sock, neck, kick and lock). Every word on a poster has its own picture.
- 1 rule chart, "c, k or ck?", with all three pictures and picture words on one page.
- 16 picture word cards to cut, each in color and in ink-saver: cat, cup, cap, cake, cow, kite, kid, king, kiss, key, kettle, duck, sock, neck, kick and lock. Each card has a picture and its word, set edge to edge, 4 across and 4 down, so each cut is one straight line.
- 8 desk strips to cut on each sheet, in color and in ink-saver: the cat, the kite and the duck with the rule beside each. 48 pieces across four cut sheets in all.
- 1 sort mat with a home for c, k and ck and lines to write each word.
- 2 fill-in pages, 20 items in all, each with a picture: fill in c or k (the starting level) and fill in c, k or ck (the ready-for-more level), the first with a line to write the whole word, the second with a letter box beside each stem plus a "my own ck word" line and a sentence line.
- Teacher pages: Start Here with a which-page-when chart, five short steps to teach it, an answer key, a class roll-up, a filled example (an invented class), a note to families, a phrase bank of 20 starters in 5 groups, and a binder cover with spine and 4 tabs.
- Contents, terms of use and a thank-you page.
How To Use It
Hang the cat and kite posters first and read the words on each one together. Add the duck poster and the chart. Cut the word cards and let children sort them on the mat: if the word ends in ck, it goes to the duck; if not, look at the first letter. Children then fill in c or k, and later c, k or ck. Give each child a desk strip to keep the rule close, and use the roll-up to see which words to practice again.
Built For The Child Holding The Page
Every student page has a big "My name" line, one short direction with a picture, and room to write. The letters that make the /k/ sound are colored in each word, and everything reads in black and white too. Cut pages come in a color set and an ink-saver set.
Type In, Or Print
The name lines, the sort mat, the fill-in pages, the class roll-up, the family note and every notes area are type-in fields in any PDF reader. You can also print any page and write by hand. Print at 100 percent with fit-to-page turned off. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
Kindergarten to 2nd grade classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, phonics and spelling centers, paraprofessionals, substitutes, and families who want to practice the same rule at home.
