About this resource
Who uses what? This deck gives a child 20 picture cards to cut apart and match: 10 community helpers and the one tool each helper uses. The cards join edge to edge, so cutting is straight lines only. Three match mats take a child from putting each tool on a faint picture, to gluing it to its helper, to writing the tool's name, and the adult pages score the same match and track it over time.
WHAT IS INCLUDED -- 23 pages, 374 type-in fields
The Picture Cards
- 20 picture cards in full color, each a big cut-apart piece laid out 5 across and 4 down, the word under the picture: 10 helpers (doctor, firefighter, police officer, chef, mechanic, builder, astronaut, pilot, artist, scientist) and 10 tools (stethoscope, fire engine, police car, pan, wrench, hammer, rocket, airplane, paintbrush, microscope)
- The same 20 cards again as an ink-saver set in pure black outlines, for the photocopier
- A note on each card page naming the 10 pictures a child may name another way (for example nurse, police, cook, fire truck, plane), so you can decide once how those answers are marked
Match Mats And Answer Key
- Match Mat 1 -- all 10 helpers, each with an empty slot the size of a card and a faint picture of its tool to put the card on, plus a drawing box
- Match Mat 2 -- the same 10 helpers with empty slots to glue each tool into, plus a drawing box
- Match Mat 3 -- write the tool each helper uses: primary handwriting lines beside every helper, a word box, and lines to write a sentence
- Every mat has a "My name" line, one short instruction with a picture, and a small level shape (a dot, a square or a triangle, not a number)
- An adult answer key: all 10 pairs, which quick form each is on, the 10 alternate names, and a line to write your own rule
Probe And Track
- 2 quick probe forms (A and B), 5 pairs each, with a separate + / - / approximately mark for the helper and for the tool. No pair is on both forms: A and B together are all 10 pairs
- Full-Deck Probe -- all 10 pairs in one sheet, a mark for the helper and for the tool, and a column for what the child said
- Data Log -- 17 rows: date, form, correct, out of, percent, notes
- Percent Graph -- 14 probes across, 0-100 percent grid, a field for the team's own criterion
- Caseload Summary -- 16 rows: student, level, baseline, current, trend, decision
Share And Write
- Helpers at Home -- a family update built from five of the same helper-and-tool pairs, a matching game to do together, a weekly practice table and lines for what the family noticed
- Phrase Bank -- 19 observable-language starters across 5 groups (accuracy, which pairs, the mats, carryover, the log, graph and caseload page)
- Filled Example -- an invented student, eight probes, every percent re-counted from its own row
ALSO INSIDE: Start Here, a contents page with page thumbnails, four section dividers, and a "what's next" back page.
HOW THIS DIFFERS FROM A SORT: nothing here is sorted into a group. Each helper has one tool, and the child matches them one to one. The Community Helper Sort Task Box sorts things connected to a helper's job from ordinary objects; this deck is the next step, naming the helper and choosing the tool that goes with it.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
It is a fillable PDF: print the mats and cards for the child, and type into the log, graph, caseload page, family page and probe-form fields, or print those and use a pen. It works offline with no account or subscription. It is NOT an editable online slideshow or word-processor document, and it is not a norm-referenced or standardized test.
It carries no lesson on community helpers and no elicitation, cueing or modeling script. It does not decide what counts as a correct match, a criterion, or a typical rate for matching helpers and tools: every one of those is your own call, written once and reused every session. It covers ten helpers and their tools; it is not a word list.
Who This Is For
Special education teachers, speech-language pathologists and paraprofessionals with young or pre-reading students working on community helper vocabulary and on matching a helper to the tool it uses, and the families who get the matching page sent home.
