About this resource

A child who can sound out CVC words needs a book made only of words they can sound out — and a book

that is theirs to keep. These are five little books, one per short vowel, eight mini-pages each, printed

four to a sheet: cut on two dashed lines, stack the numbered pages, staple on the left. Every sentence is

built only from CVC words and this store's Fry-100 sight words, checked in code, and every sentence page

has one picture that names the word in bold.

EVERYTHING INSIDE (50 pages)

sheets (2 sheets per book): a cover with a name line, 6 decodable sentence pages, and a back cover that

lists every word in the book by word family with a check box beside each

with a three-line rule under it to write the word again; the black-line picture is there to color

five short vowels) and Fry-first-hundred list — no sentence uses a word harder than one the child

already knows, and no sentence contains a second pictured word

the book's word list with a box beside each word, and a score line

every page number

How A Book Goes Together

Two letter sheets per book, printed single-sided. Cut on the two dashed lines (four mini-pages per

sheet). Stack by the number printed in the corner of every mini-page, 1 on top through 8. Two or three

staples down the left edge. The assembly page draws all three steps.

Three Versions Of Every Book

1. Read Book, color — read it together first, then the child reads it.

2. Read Book, ink-saver — the same eight mini-pages in black line, for a class set or a copy to keep.

3. Trace, Write and Color — the pictured word is a gray trace inside the sentence, a rule to write it

below, and a black-line picture to color.

Then the check: the Read It Without Pictures page for that book puts the same six sentences in front of

the child with no picture at all, so you can see whether the words were decoded or guessed.

What The Pictures Can And Cannot Do — Said Plainly

Every picture was rendered at print size in color, in grayscale and in black line and looked at before it

was kept; a word without a picture that plainly names it was left out rather than forced in (rat reads as

a mouse, hen as a chicken, jet as a plane, hog as a pig). Short a and short u have six pictured words

each. Short e and short o have five, so one picture appears on two pages of those books, with a different

sentence each time. Short i has ONE pictured word — pig — so the short-i book is six pages about one pig

(big, dig, sit, hid, bit a fig, did win), pictured on every page, and its Trace and Write book practices

"pig" six times. The Start Here page and the Picture Key say the same thing inside the file.

Type In, Or Print

The name line on every mini-book cover, the check pages, the tracker, the class grid and the family

page are type-in fields in any PDF reader — type a child's name on the cover before printing a book.

The sentence pages are pencil, crayon and scissors work. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google

Slides, Google Docs or PowerPoint file.

Who This Is For

Self-contained, resource and early-intervention rooms, and any K-1 classroom with students who can read

single CVC words and are ready for a first book of their own. Pairs with this store's Decodable Sentences

CVC Sentence-Picture Match (the same kind of sentence, one at a time, in four formats).

What This Is, And What It Is Not

A print-and-assemble set of decodable booklets with the record-keeping around it. It is not a reading

curriculum, not a phonics program, and not a claim about any student's age or rate of progress.
