About this resource

Your K-2 readers are all over the map: one still needs a word bank, one can write a sentence, one is

ready to say why. A winter read-aloud for the whole group usually means the comprehension page fits

one of them. This set is one 129-word decodable winter story, Winter Fun with Kit and Spot, read

together three times, and then three different question pages on the same story, so every child

answers the same read-aloud at a level they can actually do today.

Every word of the passage was checked in code against this store's own phonics word banks:

short-vowel CVC words, beginning and ending blends, digraphs, silent e, vowel teams, and -s/-ed/-ing

endings. The 14 heart words a child reads by sight (the, a, is, it, and so on) and the one

pre-taught word, mittens, are listed on a teacher page so you know exactly what to put on the board

before the first read. Nothing in the story is harder than those patterns.

How To Use It

What This Is, And What It Is Not

It is a fillable PDF: the student pages, the class record and the family note are type-in or

print-and-write. It is one winter story at three question levels, with the teacher pages that go

around it. It is not a reading test and not a level score: A, B and C name the question page a child

used today, and the same child can take a different page next week. It is not a slide deck or a

word-processor file. It carries no benchmark, no age, and no claim about any child.

Who This Is For

K-2 special education and intervention teachers with a mixed-level reading group who want one shared

read-aloud and a comprehension page every child can do. Also general education K-1 teachers running

small groups, and anyone who wants a decodable passage whose vocabulary has actually been checked against

the patterns taught, not just labeled decodable.
