About this resource
Decoding drills, one minute at a time: real one-syllable words, four patterns mixed, four matched forms. An IEP goal page, four one-minute forms, answer keys for every word, a pattern map, a graph scaled to the probe, and a filled-in example. Baseline on three days, goal written by Tuesday, first point on Friday.
Every word is a real, one-syllable word with one vowel sound, and every form has ten words of each pattern: a short vowel (jam), a digraph (thick), a blend (stamp) and a silent e (cube). The forms are matched and no word appears on two forms, so the score means the same thing every week. The patterns are mixed on each form, with no three words in a row sharing one pattern.
WHAT IS INCLUDED - 20 pages: four one-minute forms of 40 real words each (160 words in all, none repeated), a goal page, a How This Pack Works page, a binder cover with six divider tabs, a how-to-read-the-patterns page for the student, two answer key pages with every word and its pattern, a pattern map and error tally, teacher notes, a data log and graph, a caseload summary, a filled-in example, a family update and team handoff, an adult drill script, and a thank-you page with the terms.
A Student Page To Start With (Page 6)
- Four patterns with one example word each, and three steps: find the vowel, look for the two letters that make one sound, look at the e at the end
- Three words to try, not scored, and a line for the student's own word with a blend
Four One-Minute Forms, A Through D (Pages 7-10)
- Forty words a form in four columns, large type, each with a small number so you can mark misses
- A big My name line and one short instruction with a book picture
- No answers, goal text or scoring strip on a student sheet
The Goal Page And Binder (Pages 4-5)
- A sample goal with every bracket meant to be edited by the team
- The goal frame as type-in fields, a baseline table with three probes and the median, and three benchmark rows
- The timing and scoring directions, and lines for this student's scoring rules
- A binder cover with student, case manager and school year fields, and six divider tabs to print and cut
Two Answer Key Pages (Pages 11-12)
- Every word on all four forms, with its number and its pattern, in two half-tables per form
- A Correct ___ / 40 box under each form
Pattern Map And Error Tally (Page 13)
- The count of each pattern on each form, from the module (ten of each on every form)
- A tally table to fill in after each probe, with a column for each pattern's misses, and a line for the next pattern to teach
The Data Log And Graph (Page 15)
- A y-axis already scaled 0 to 40, twelve probe columns, and the instruction to draw the aim line from the baseline to the criterion first
- A twelve-row log with date, form, correct, errors, the score used on the graph, and notes
The Caseload Summary (Page 16)
- Twelve student rows, baseline and criterion, eight probe columns, a trend column and a decision column
A Worked Example (Page 17)
- Eli, second grade, invented. Twelve weekly probes: the baseline as a median, three points under the aim line forcing a teaching change, the criterion met, and the progress-report sentence the log produces
A Family Update And Team Handoff (Page 18)
- A family update with blanks for this week's score, a team handoff checklist, and a meeting summary sentence with blanks for two numbers off the log
An Adult Drill Script (Page 19)
- The exact words to say and the steps for one minute, for a paraprofessional, a substitute or a general education teacher who gives the probe when you cannot
- What not to do, and where the sheet goes the same day
What This Is, And What It Is Not
It is a fillable PDF. The goal page, pattern tally, data log, caseload page, family update page and the Correct boxes on the answer key are type-in fields: open the file in a PDF reader, click a line or a cell, type, and Save As once per student. The probe pages print clean: the student reads on paper.
Who This Is For
First, second and third grade special education teachers and case managers writing a reading goal for one-minute decoding, intervention teachers, and the paraprofessionals who give the weekly probe.
