About this resource
Looking for distributive property notes students can actually write on? This is a complete guided-notes unit for grades 6-8, laid out with real room to show steps. It starts with a steps page that draws the arrow method: one arrow from the outside number to each term inside the parentheses. It shows how to factor out a greatest common factor, how the signs work with negatives, and how to check by putting the same number in for x in both forms. Two worked examples (one distributing in, one factoring out) each come with a guided copy where students fill in the blanks. Then come an area model, five graded practice sets, do-they-match checks, a page of invented student work with a mistake to find, word problems, exit tickets and a cut-and-paste match. Answer keys show the value both forms share, so a student's check line is easy to read at a glance.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (26 pages)
- 14 student pages, in 10 different types, each with a name line and one short instruction
- 56 scored items across 11 scored sheets, every answer computed by program from the same expressions that print on the page
- 1 steps page with the arrow method drawn, factoring out, and a signs example
- 2 worked examples (distribute in, factor out), each with a guided copy for students to fill in
- 1 area model page: 4 rectangles split into two parts, then add
- 18 distribute-in problems in 3 sets of 6: whole numbers and x, negatives, and combining like terms
- 12 factor-out problems in 2 sets of 6: a positive GCF, then subtraction and a negative first term
- 6 Do They Match? items: put a number in on both sides and decide if the forms are equal
- 4 Find the Mistake problems (an invented student's work, one mistake each)
- 3 word problems: write the expression with parentheses, distribute, then check with a number
- 3 exit tickets with a "how sure am I" check
- 6 cut-and-paste pieces on 1 match mat (factored forms into boxes labeled with the expanded form)
- 3 answer keys; 1 tracker, 1 class grid, 1 team note
- 1 filled example (an invented student), 1 phrase bank (17 starters in 6 groups)
- Start Here page, with a "which page for which job" table
How To Use It
Teach with page 4 and the two worked examples, then hand out one practice page at a time. Students can type into the file or print it. The Do They Match? page works well as a quick check before the practice sets, and the exit tickets close a lesson. The keys and records are on separate teacher pages.
Built For The Student Holding The Page
A "My name" line, one short instruction with a small picture cue, and a plain scalloped border. Nothing on a student page is written for an adult. Work boxes sit on every practice problem, with a check line on each distribute-in problem. Clip art is kept to a lightbulb, a question mark and a pencil. The file prints clean in black and white.
Invented Examples
Every expression, story and student is made up for practice and says so. The filled example names an invented student.
Type In, Or Print
The name line, every answer box, every check box and every ruled work box are type-in fields in any PDF reader: click one, type, then save. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
A distributive property practice unit with the record-keeping around it. It is not a timed test, a screener, a clinical tool, or a claim about any student's age or rate of progress. There is no IEP goal language or eligibility wording anywhere in the file.
