About this resource

The 1-1-1 doubling rule tells students when to double the last letter before adding -ing, -ed, -er or -est. This is a complete kit for the rule: sort words by the rule, fill in the blanks and circle the correct spelling, a tracker, a class grid, a family note and a classroom discussion starter, so nothing has to be written from scratch.

EVERYTHING INSIDE (21 pages)

The Three Formats, Easiest To Hardest

1. Sort It (starting) — all 24 base words shuffled together in one word bank; two blank columns labeled DOUBLE or DON'T DOUBLE; the student writes each word in the right column based on the 1-1-1 rule. Level 1.

2. Fill in the Blank (building) — a 12-word bank and 12 sentences for one set (doubling or non-doubling words); write a word from the box to finish each sentence. Level 2.

3. Circle It (ready for more) — 12 base words with three spelling choices each (correct, wrong-doubling, wrong-other); circle the one spelled correctly. Level 3.

Built For The Child Holding The Page

A big "My name" line, one short instruction, large rounded letters, real room to work, and dots (not words) to show which level a page is. Nothing on a student page is written for an adult.

Every word is checked: one syllable, one vowel letter, one final consonant — or explicitly two/two/more so it does NOT double. The rule is not guessed; it is applied to every word and verified in code.

Type In, Or Print

The name and date lines, the tracker, the class grid, the family note and the discussion starter are type-in fields in any PDF reader. The words a student writes or circles are pencil work. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.

Who This Is For

Kindergarten, first and second grade classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, and any teacher running a spelling or phonics routine. The classroom discussion starter sends the doubling rule to a whole-class setting; the family note sends it home.

What This Is, And What It Is Not

A classroom spelling-rule worksheet set with the record-keeping around it. It is NOT a behavior plan, a screener, a clinical or diagnostic tool, or a claim about any student's age or rate of progress. There is no IEP goal language or eligibility wording anywhere in the file. This product teaches the 1-1-1 doubling rule only; it is DISTINCT from the FLOSS rule (ff/ll/ss/zz endings), which is a different product.
