About this resource
A call comes in before seven, and there is a stack of paperwork ready for the substitute but nothing to actually put in front of the class. This pack is the other half of that morning: a full day a substitute can teach cold, with reading, math and letter-and-sound work at three levels, an answer key for every page that has one, and a short report back to the classroom teacher at the end of the day. Undated and theme-free, so it is ready any week of the year.
WHAT IS INCLUDED - 20 pages, 185 type-in fields
Setup
- Read This First - six steps for how the day runs, what to do if a student does not want to start an activity (a blank line for the school's own rule, not a procedure this pack invents), who to ask for help, a before-the-bell checklist, and what to trim first if time runs short
- How the Type-In Fields Work - one page, so nobody emails you
- Today's Schedule - 8 rows (arrival, four blocks, lunch, specials, dismissal): blank times, and every block matched to the page that runs it
- Quick Reference - where things are, room routines, who covers what today, and space for any student supports the classroom teacher wants to note, in their own words
- Level Guide - 3 levels (A, B, C), what each looks like in a student's own experience of the worksheet, and a row for the classroom teacher to name which students work at which level
The Taught Day, Three Levels
- Reading Block - an invented short story (a duck and a frog at a pond, made up for this activity), a vocabulary card, and read-aloud tips, then 5 true/false statements at Level A, 4 short-answer questions at Level B, and 3 more independent questions at Level C
- Reading Answer Key - matches every question, with grading guidance for the open-ended Level C responses
- Math Block - 10 addition problems within 10 at Level A, 10 addition and subtraction problems within 20 at Level B, and 8 two-digit addition/subtraction problems plus 2 word problems at Level C, each problem with its own blank answer cell
- Math Answer Key - every answer worked and checked by hand
- Letter and Sound Practice - the same 6 words carry all three levels: match the uppercase to the lowercase letter (Level A), write the beginning sound (Level B), write the missing middle vowel (Level C)
- Letter and Sound Practice Answer Key - plus a side-by-side summary table
Wrap-Up
- Brain Break - two five-minute movement lists (one active, one quieter) and a table of natural moments in the day to use one
- Support Quick-Reference - 6 rows for the classroom teacher to copy in what already exists in a student's own plan, before the day starts
- What We Did Today - an activities-completed checklist, a block-by-block timing table, a notes field for the regular teacher, and a note for whoever teaches the room next
- A filled-in example day for an invented substitute, classroom teacher and class
What This Is, And What It Is Not
It is a fillable PDF. Open it in a PDF reader, click a line, a box or a cell, type, press Tab to move on, and print the student worksheets. It works offline with no account or subscription. It is NOT an editable slide deck or a word processor file, and it does not grade the answer keys for you.
It is not the paperwork binder - there is no roster, no contact sheet and no emergency-card template here (see the two Sub Binder listings above for that). Nothing in this pack asserts a procedure for a student who does not want to start an activity, a behavior plan, a label or a physical intervention: the classroom teacher's own rule and the district's own rule each get a blank line to write on. No health information is pre-filled anywhere. The example substitute, teacher, class and every student named on the example page are invented for this listing.
Who This Is For
Special education teachers building a folder for the day a substitute is called in, general education teachers in the same building, and the paraprofessionals or long-term substitutes who may be asked to run the room.
