About this resource
Expanding utterances for speech therapy sessions, the classroom and small groups: 24 sentence expansion strips that grow a short sentence one step at a time, 32 word tiles to build with, worksheets with room to write and a data sheet. The student reads a short sentence, adds the next part (a describing word, where, when) and says the whole sentence, and you mark it against the strip. You choose the targets.
EVERYTHING INSIDE — 30 pages
- 24 expansion strips on 3 pages (8 to a page), cut apart 2 across and 4 down so each cut is one straight line. Each page holds 2 ladders of 4 steps: start, add a describing word, add where, add when. 6 ladders in 3 sets (Animals, School, Home). The added words are underlined. Words only, no pictures
- 32 word tiles on 2 pages (4 across, 4 down): Who, Doing, How and Where, 8 of each
- Try One Together: one sentence growing step by step
- Build a Sentence mat: 3 rows of four boxes (Who, Doing, How, Where) with a line to write each sentence
- Make It Longer: 3 pages, 9 short sentences to grow (add a describing word, add where, add when), 2 writing lines each
- Which Tells More?: 6 pairs of sentences, circle the one that tells more
- Make My Own Sentence: write a short sentence and grow it in three steps, with a three-circle check
- 8 blank strips for your own sentences
- A how-to page and an answer key
- A Trial Data Sheet (20 rows: date, set, strip number, words the student used, plus or minus, your own prompt code, initials)
- A weekly roll-up (8 weeks) with a percent graph
- A filled example: an invented student, one week on the data sheet and three weeks on the roll-up
- A family page with 6 small cards to cut apart and a note home
- A hand-off page so another adult or room uses the strips the same way
- A phrase bank: 23 lines in 6 groups (spoken lines, and written starters for the data sheet, the roll-up and the note home)
- A storage and binder label sheet: 12 labels and a spine strip
- Start Here, a contents page that maps every page, and a "what's next" back page
The Sentences
A dog ran. A big dog ran. A big dog ran to the park. A big dog ran to the park today. Every sentence is a plain, everyday one with invented characters. There are no health, family or personal sentences.
The Student Pages
Every student page has a "My name" line, one short instruction, big rounded words, and room to build, circle or write. 15 worksheet items in all (9 to grow, 6 to compare).
What This Is, And What It Is Not
It is a fillable PDF: type into the name lines, the writing lines, the data sheet, the roll-up, the family page and the hand-off page with type-in fields, or print and use a pen. It works offline with no account or subscription. It is NOT an editable online slideshow or word-processor document.
Who This Is For
Speech-language pathologists, special education teachers, classroom teachers and paraprofessionals working with students in grades K-3, and the families who get the home page.
