About this resource
Short vowel, then f, l, s or z: double it. Children learn it faster when they play with it. This is a print-and-play set for grades K to 2 with 48 word cards (12 ff, 16 ll, 16 ss and 4 zz words like puff, bell, miss and buzz), a path board game, Go Fish for Endings and Floss Bingo. Cut and laminate once, then play all year. The student sheets are type-in fillable PDF pages.
What Is Included
- 48 word cards, each 2 inches by 2.5 inches, 16 to a sheet, edge to edge so you make a few straight cuts. The doubled ending is bold and colored on every card: ff orange, ll blue, ss green, zz purple. Every word is one syllable with a short vowel. Bell, doll, dress and grass also carry a small picture.
- 3 games: a Path Board Game (a winding 30-space path with Roll Again and Go Back 1 spaces), Go Fish for Endings (12 books to make) and Floss Bingo (4 boards with a free center).
- 8 student sheets: the path board, a sort mat, a Words I Read Today recording sheet, a Sentence Time page and 4 bingo boards.
- 2 posters for the wall: a Remember poster ("After a short vowel, f l s z doubles") and a How to Play poster for the path board, plus 8 desk strips with the rule.
- Three shapes marking word size on each card: circle for the 27 four-letter words, square for the 18 five-letter words, triangle for the 3 six-letter words. Deal one shape, two, or all three.
- Teacher pages: Start Here with a which-page-when table, how to play each game in three steps, a word key with all 12 Go Fish books, a bingo key, a tracker with a roll-up, a filled example (invented student), a family page, a What's Next page, terms of use and a thank-you page.
How To Play
1. Print, cut and laminate the word cards once. Every card is edge to edge, so each cut is one straight line.
2. Pick a game. For the Path Board Game, roll a number cube, move, and read a card from the pile that matches the ending on your space. For Go Fish, ask for an ll word, read what you get, and lay down a book of four. For Floss Bingo, the caller reads a word and players cover it.
3. Record on the student sheets, check with the key, and color a box on the tracker.
Built For The Child Holding The Page
Every word is big and set in a rounded, beginning-reader style font, with the doubled ending in color so the pattern is the first thing a child sees. Every student sheet has a "My name" line, one short direction with a picture, and room to write. A card still reads when copied in black and white.
Type In, Or Print
The name lines, the word boxes and the sentence lines on the student sheets are type-in fields in any PDF reader, and you can print any page and write by hand. Print at 100 percent with fit-to-page turned off. This is a fillable PDF for printing and typing; it is not a slide or word processor file.
Who This Is For
Teachers of grades K to 2, resource rooms and self-contained classrooms who want a phonics center or small-group game for words that end in ff, ll, ss and zz without making anything themselves.
