About this resource
Sight words are the words a child has to know without sounding out, and a child needs to meet each one more than
once, in more than one way. This is a complete practice kit for the Fry first hundred words: say it, trace it in
three colors, write it, find it in a grid, fill in the missing letter, put five word pieces in order, and read a
sentence and draw it. Every student page has a big "My name" line and big rounded letters; Rainbow Write has
writing boxes on primary lines.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (50 pages)
- 34 student pages in 6 page types (below), each with a big "My name" line and one short instruction
- 100 words: the Fry first hundred, in 12 sets of 8 or 9 words, in the list's own order
- 12 Rainbow Write pages: every one of the 100 words, printed solid, then three faded copies to trace in red, blue and green, then a primary-lines box to write it alone
- 6 Find and Color pages: a Word Box of 16 to 18 words and a shuffled grid of 30 words; 100 words to find in all
- 6 Missing Letter pages: 77 of the 100 words (the ones with three or more letters) with one letter left out (a box) and a Word Box to check; the 23 one- and two-letter words (a, I, of, to, in and so on) have no honest single-letter blank, so this one page type is scoped to 77, not 100
- 5 Build a Sentence pages: 10 five-word sentences, 50 cut-and-glue pieces, two rows a page that take 5 straight cuts
- 4 Read and Draw pages: 12 sentences, each read three times (three circles) and drawn in a big box
- 22 different sentences in all, all invented; every one uses at least one Fry word (32 of the 100 show up across the 22 sentences); every other word in them is one of 19 everyday words (dog, bird, cake, rain and so on)
- 1 word-list page with every set and its page numbers, 2 answer keys generated from the same data as the pages
- 1 tracker (33 rows), 1 class progress grid, 1 team note, 1 home page, 1 filled example (an invented student), 1 phrase bank (17 starters)
- 1 binder cover and 6 divider tabs with a spine label to cut out
- Start Here, a how-to-read-a-page page, and a back page
THE SIX PAGE TYPES (dots show the level, never color)
1. Say It, Trace It, Write It (1 dot) — the routine on one word: say it, trace it in three colors, write it alone.
2. Rainbow Write (1 dot, 12 pages) — 8 or 9 words a page. Each row: the word solid, three faded copies with a red, a blue and a green dot, and a primary-lines box.
3. Find and Color (2 dots, 6 pages) — a Word Box, then a grid of 30 words in a shuffled order; the child colors each word that is in the box. The other words in the grid are Fry words that are not in the box.
4. Missing Letter (2 dots, 6 pages) — a word with one letter out. The blank is placed so that only one word in that page's Word Box fits it. Scoped to the 77 words of three or more letters.
5. Build a Sentence (3 dots, 5 pages) — cut ten pieces (five words to a sentence, first piece with a capital letter, last with the end mark) and glue each sentence in order on its row. No piece starts in its own place.
6. Read and Draw (3 dots, 4 pages) — read a sentence three times, color a circle each time, draw it in a big box.
Built For The Child Holding The Page
A big "My name" line, one short instruction with a picture, large rounded letters, and writing boxes on primary lines at least 0.5 inch tall on Rainbow Write. Nothing on a student page is written for an adult. No picture is used for a sight word, so no picture can name the wrong word. Cutting is limited to Build a Sentence (10 pieces a page, each 1.4 inches wide and 1.3 inches tall, touching edge to edge) and the divider tabs.
Type In, Or Print
The name and date lines, the tracker, the class grid, the team note, the home page and the note boxes are type-in fields in any PDF reader. The tracing, the writing, the coloring and the cutting are pencil, crayon and scissors work. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
Kindergarten and first grade classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, and any teacher working with an older student who still needs these words. The home page sends the same job to a family; the team note hands off what changed since the last meeting.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
Practice pages for one word list, with the record-keeping around them. It is not a probe, a goal bank or a score sheet, and it makes no claim about any student's age or rate of progress. The word list is the Fry first hundred (100 words, none typed twice); if your program orders the list differently, the word-list page has a box for it.
