About this resource

A word (always shown with a picture where the format uses one) — is its vowel sound short or long? Four

ways to sort the same 22 words: write the picture's number in the Short or Long box, circle Short or Long

next to the word, cut and glue word cards under the right header, or copy each word by hand into the

right column. Three sets, a mix of both lengths in every set.

EVERYTHING INSIDE (28 pages)

Write the Word)

11 long-vowel silent-e words (cake, snake, wave, plane, bike, kite, slide, bone, nose, rose, flute),

every picture checked against both Google Noto and Microsoft Fluent High Contrast

and a star to color when finished. No adult text on a child page. Only one page per set has scissors

(Cut and Paste Sort); the other three formats are pencil-only

words

1 team note page, 1 home page (five short-and-long pairs to practice), 1 filled example, 1 phrase bank

pieces, edge to edge, so each cut is one straight line)

vs. long reference table, a contents page that gives every page number, and a "What's next" back page

The Four Formats

1. Picture Sort (most support): numbered picture tiles at the top, two boxes below headed Short Vowel

Sound and Long Vowel Sound. The child writes each tile's number in the box that matches. No letters

to spell.

2. Cut and Paste Sort: word cards only, no pictures. The child cuts them out and glues them under the

Short or Long header.

3. Circle the Sound: the picture and its printed word together; the child reads it and circles Short or

Long.

4. Write the Word (hardest): a word bank at the top, no pictures. The child copies each word by hand onto

a ruled line under the right column.

Every format uses the same three sets of words, so the one answer key on page 19 works for all four.

Short Vs. Long, One Pattern

Type In, Or Print

The name and date lines, the tracker, the class grid, the team note and the home page are type-in fields

in any PDF reader. The circling, cutting, gluing and writing students do are pencil-and-scissors work, and

every child page prints clean in black and white. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or

PowerPoint file.

Who This Is For

Kindergarten through second-grade classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, and any teacher with a

student who is starting to tell short and long vowel sounds apart. Your district's or program's scope and

sequence decides which set comes first.

What This Is, And What It Is Not

Short-vs-long vowel sound sorting practice with the record-keeping around it. It is not a reading

assessment and not a claim about any student's age or rate of progress. The invented student in the

example is labeled as invented.
