About this resource
Fat becomes fate. Twin becomes twine. This is a complete magic-e (CVCe) worksheet kit built entirely around
that transformation: sixteen real before-and-after word pairs, five ways to practice them, and the
record-keeping around it. There are no pictures anywhere in this file — every exercise reads a short word and
works with it, in pencil.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (28 pages)
- 10 student pages in 5 formats — two sets of eight word pairs in each format
- 1 Magic E Helper page: the rule with four pairs (fat/fate, twin/twine, rod/rode, hug/huge) and a
read-it-add-the-e-say-it-again trick
- 16 before/after word pairs (32 words): a_e fat, rat, mat, slat, gap; i_e twin, spin, fin, strip, slim;
o_e rod, cod, mop, slop; u_e hug, dun
- 2 answer keys, generated from the same data as the pages
- 1 tracker (all 16 pairs, four formats) and 1 class progress grid
- 1 team note page and 1 home page (four say-it-and-write-it boxes)
- 1 filled example (an invented student), 1 phrase bank (16 starters), 1 binder cover, and 6 divider tabs
with a spine label to cut out
- Start Here, a how-to-read-a-page page, a contents page that gives every page number, and a pattern key
The Five Formats, Easiest To Hardest
1. Add the Magic E (starting) — the short word is printed; add the one missing letter, the e.
2. Which One Has the Magic E? (starting) — both words of a pair are printed side by side; circle the one
with the silent e. No pictures.
3. Vowel + Magic E (building) — two blanks: write the vowel, then the e.
4. Circle the Correct Spelling (building) — three printed spellings (the real magic-e word, the before word,
and one more real word a letter or two away); circle the real one.
5. Write Both Words (ready for more) — the short word is given; write its magic-e word, checked against a
word bank.
Each format uses the same sixteen pairs in two sets of eight (A, B), so a child never meets the same pair
twice in one format: 80 exercises (16 pairs x 5 formats).
Built For The Child Holding The Page
A big "My name" line, one short instruction with a drawn icon, large rounded letters, big boxes with room to
write, and dots (not words) to show which level a page is. Nothing on a student page is written for an adult.
No Pictures, On Purpose
A Different 32 Words From Everything Else On This Store'S Silent-E Shelf
This bank was picked with zero overlap with the 77-word bank both silent-e progress-monitoring probes draw
from and this store's own Silent E Worksheets pack uses for its word-pairs page, and with zero overlap with
the words on the Silent E Cut and Paste sort. If you already own any of those, every pair here is new to you.
Type In, Or Print
The name and date lines, the tracker, the class grid, the team note and the home page are type-in fields in
any PDF reader. The letters a student writes in the boxes are pencil work. This is a fillable PDF; it is not
a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
Kindergarten, first and second grade classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, and any teacher working
with an older student who still needs the magic-e pattern. The home page sends the same job to a family; the
team note hands off what changed since the last meeting.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
Magic-e practice with the record-keeping around it. It is not a probe, a goal bank or a score sheet, not a
reading assessment, and not a claim about any student's age or rate of progress.
