About this resource
Teaching magnetism and need pages students can actually work on? This is a complete unit for grades 6-8: poles, attract and repel, magnetic and nonmagnetic objects, magnetic fields and field lines, domains, the compass and Earth's magnetic field. Every magnet, field line, compass and domain grid is drawn for this file, and every answer is worked out in the keys. Students read a short passage, decide whether two magnets attract or repel, sort objects, label a magnet and its field lines, explain domains, and write short answers with real room to show their thinking.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (44 pages)
- 30 student pages in 15 kinds of page, each with a name line and one short instruction
- 159 scored items on 29 sheets, every answer worked out from the picture it belongs to
- 4 short readings, each with a picture and 4 questions: poles and forces, magnetic fields, domains, Earth's magnetic field
- 2 vocabulary pages: match 8 words to meanings, then fill 8 sentences from a word box
- 3 Attract or Repel pages (18 drawn magnet pairs and magnet-and-object pictures): decide attract, repel or no force, and find the missing pole
- 2 Magnetic or Not pages: 10 pictured objects, then 8 named by material
- 3 field-line pages: label a magnet and its field lines, read attract and repel field pictures, tell a strong field from a weak one
- 1 compass page (6 needles to check) and 1 Earth page (5 labels)
- 2 domain pages: tiny arrows in plain iron and in a magnet, and a magnet cut in half
- 2 true or false pages (16 statements); 2 short-answer pages (6 questions, 4 ruled lines each); 1 Find the Mistake page (4 problems)
- 2 quizzes (8 items); 1 exit ticket page (3 tickets); 1 self check (8 statements)
- 18 cut-and-paste pieces on 3 sort mats (attract, repel or no force; magnetic, metal but not magnetic, or not a metal; pole, field or domain)
- 3 answer key pages; 1 tracker, 1 class grid, 1 team note, 1 family page
- 1 filled example (an invented student), 1 phrase bank (17 starters in 6 groups)
- Start Here and a how-to-read-a-page page
Built For The Student Holding The Page
A "My name" line, one short instruction with a small picture cue, and a plain scalloped border. Nothing on a student page is written for an adult: the keys and records are on separate teacher pages. North poles are red and marked N, south poles are blue and marked S, so the pages still read when copied in black and white. Work boxes hold two or more ruled lines, and short answers get four. Clip art is kept to a question mark, a book and a pencil; the magnets and diagrams are drawn by us.
Invented Examples
Every picture, object and sentence is made up for practice and says so. The filled example names an invented student, and the Find the Mistake student is invented too.
Type In, Or Print
The name line, every answer box, every check box and every ruled work box are type-in fields in any PDF reader: click one, type, then save. You can also print any page. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
A magnetism practice set with the record-keeping around it. It is not a timed test, a screener, a clinical tool, or a claim about any student's age or rate of progress. There is no IEP goal language or eligibility wording anywhere in the file, and it does not claim to match any one state's standards: there is a line on the tracker for your own.
