About this resource

Looking for main idea task cards that a 2nd, 3rd or 4th grader can read and answer on their own? This set has 24 numbered task cards. Each card is a short invented passage of 3 or 4 sentences with a picture, the question "What is the main idea?" and three answer choices. One choice is the main idea, one is only a detail, and one is not in the passage at all. Cards come in three levels, 8 cards each, marked with a circle, a square or a triangle so children are not comparing numbers. Print the cards, cut and laminate once, and use them in a center, as a scoot game or with partners. A recording sheet for each level, a poster, an answer key and the record-keeping a teacher needs are all included.

EVERYTHING INSIDE (29 pages)

The Cards

Every passage is invented: invented names, no brands, no real people. Every card can be answered from its own text. The right letter is A on 8 cards, B on 8 and C on 8, and never the same letter twice in a row, so the pattern cannot be guessed. The wrong choices are not silly: a detail is a true fact from the card, and a choice that is not in the card tempts a child to answer from guessing.

How A Student Uses It

1. Read the poster together: read, ask, look, pick.

2. Practice with the Big Idea or Detail? page.

3. Take a card, read it, and check A, B or C on the My Answers sheet.

4. Check with the key, fill in a Main Idea Map, then write a card of your own.

Three Shapes, Three Supports

A small circle, square or triangle on each card and page shows how much help it gives. Hand each student the shape that fits today. Every name and story here is invented.

Built For The Student Holding The Page

A "My name" line, one short instruction with a small picture cue, a scalloped border, big print and room to write. Nothing on a student page is written for an adult: the keys and the tracker are on separate teacher pages. The cards are 3.7 by 4.5 inches; print them on card stock, cut them apart once and laminate. The file prints clean in black and white.

Type In, Or Print

The name line, every check box, answer box and writing box on the student pages are type-in fields in any PDF reader: click one, type, then save. The same goes for the tracker, the class grid, the team note and the family page. The cards themselves are made to print and hold. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.

Who This Is For

Second, third and fourth grade teachers, special education and resource rooms, reading groups, co-taught classes, tutors, and substitutes who need a center that is ready to hand out.

What This Is, And What It Is Not

A main idea task card set with the record-keeping around it. It is not a timed test, a screener, a clinical tool, or a claim about any student's age or rate of progress. There is no IEP goal language or eligibility wording anywhere in the file.
