About this resource
Main idea vs. supporting details, practiced four different ways around six short, original
passages written for this file: circle it, write it, map it, and sort it. No prep beyond printing
— every passage, every multiple-choice option, and every answer key is already written and already
checked against its own text.
WHAT IS INCLUDED — 25 pages
Start Here And Reference
- Start Here — the three steps, and a chooser that matches where a child is to which format to use
- How to Use This Pack — what each page type looks like, the dot system, and why four formats share
the same six passages
- What Is a Main Idea? — definitions of main idea and supporting detail, with a blank for your own
program's wording, and a table of where every passage is practiced
Six Original Passages, Four Practice Formats
- Main Idea Helper — a worked example, side by side, before the first practice page
- Multiple Choice (2 passages) — circle the main idea from four choices, then circle a detail from
four choices; the wrong choices are real supporting details, never random sentences
- Write the Main Idea (2 passages) — write the main idea and two supporting details in your own
words, plus one reason
- Main Idea Map (2 passages) — a fill-in graphic organizer: one main idea box, three detail boxes
- Match Details to the Main Idea (2 passages) — cut and sort six sentence cards into "Supports the
Main Idea" or "Does Not Support," each one checkable directly against the passage's own text
Answer Keys, Tracking And Reporting
- 2 answer keys with every passage's main idea and details, and why each multiple-choice distractor
was chosen
- Progress Tracker — 16 rows to date and check each page against the keys
- Progress Snapshot — the roll-up: four formats, pages done and items correct, ready for a team
meeting
- Team Note / Note Home — a family update or team hand-off with blanks for your own wording
- Practice at Home — the same skill explained for families, with an example and a weekly tally
- A filled-in example for an invented student across all four formats, every number checked against
its own table
Organizer And Back Matter
- Binder Cover and 5 Divider Tabs plus a spine label, cut along the dashed lines
- A back page naming what's next from this collection
What This Is, And What It Is Not
It is a fillable PDF. Open it in a PDF reader, click a line or a box, type, and Save As per student
on the teacher-facing pages; the nine student pages print clean in black and white and are pencil
work, with nothing to type except the name and date line. It is NOT a Google Slides, Google Docs or
PowerPoint file, and it is not a smartboard activity.
It is not a reading test, a Lexile or grade-level placement tool, and not a screener for any
clinical category. Every passage is invented and at a primary reading level; the invented student
on the filled example is labeled as invented, and no real student's information is pre-filled
anywhere.
Who This Is For
Second grade teachers, special education teachers and reading interventionists who want main idea
practice in more than one format — multiple choice for a child who is just starting, writing and a
graphic organizer for a child ready to work independently, and a cut-and-sort match for the skill of
telling a detail from an unrelated sentence.
