About this resource
A money-word-problem kit for first and second grade: combining coins to find a total, working out
change from a purchase, comparing coins to a price, finding the fewest coins for an amount, reading a
full word problem with room to show work, and a cut-and-glue match — six genuinely different ways to
practice, every coin always drawn and under a dollar, plus the record-keeping a classroom or small
group needs around it.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (29 pages)
- 8 How Much in All? word problems across 2 pages — a named story, two or three kinds of coins drawn;
count them and write the total in cents
- 8 How Much Change Back? word problems across 2 pages — an item's price and the coins paid; work out
the change and write it in cents
- 8 Can You Afford It? word problems across 2 pages — a price and a coin group; circle YES or NO,
split evenly between the two answers so the page can't be guessed from a pattern
- 8 Fewest Coins targets across 2 pages — a target amount; fill in how many of each coin, using as
few coins as possible. The key's "fewest" answer is checked two different ways in code (always
reach for the biggest coin first, and a second method that tries every combination) so a short-cut
can never ship a wrong count
- 8 Money Story Problems across 2 pages, PLUS a worked example shown solved at the top of the first
page — full 2-3 sentence stories about earning or spending money, with a "my work" space and an
answer box; no (operation, amount, amount) triple repeats and no two answers are alike anywhere in
the set, the same no-repeat pattern Story Problems Worksheets Within 20 uses, checked at build time
- 12 Cut and Glue pieces across 2 pages — match an amount to the coins that make it (Set A), or a
short phrase to the amount it describes (Set B)
- 3 answer keys, generated from the same coin values and arithmetic every worksheet uses
- 1 practice tracker (one student, six formats), 1 progress snapshot (a bar graph rolling the six
scores into one picture), and 1 class grid (whole class), type-in or print
- 1 family update — a note home with blanks for the week's formats and the district's own wording
- 1 home practice page — a second setting (home, an after-school program, a paraprofessional) using
real coins, no school materials needed
- 1 filled example — an invented student, every number checked against its own table
- 1 phrase bank — progress-note, family-note, next-step and talk-first starters
- 1 binder cover with a spine label and six divider tabs
- Start Here, a how-it-works page, and a contents page that gives every page number
Every Number Computed, Never Typed
Every total, every change amount, every afford comparison and every money-story answer in this file
comes from adding, subtracting or comparing the coin values shown, in code (a penny is always 1 cent,
a nickel 5, a dime 10, a quarter 25). The Fewest Coins key is checked against a second, independent
method before the file is built, so the shortcut used to draw the key can never quietly ship a wrong
answer. The eight Money Story Problems are drawn from a large pool with a seeded, assert-checked
search so no two stories repeat the same numbers or the same answer.
Six Ways To Practice
How Much in All? combines coins into a total. How Much Change Back? works out change from a price.
Can You Afford It? compares coins to a price. Fewest Coins asks for the smallest number of coins that
make an amount. Money Story Problems is a full narrative with room to show work. Cut and Glue matches
an amount to its coins, or a phrase to its amount.
Cents, Never Dollars
Every value in this file is written as a number of cents (for example "47¢"), never as a dollar
amount, and every amount stays under 100 cents. Nothing in this file is priced inside the PDF.
Type In, Or Print
The name and date lines, every answer box, the Fewest Coins blanks, the tracker, the snapshot, the
class grid, the family update and the home page are type-in fields in any PDF reader; every coin is
always printed, never typed. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides, Google Docs or
PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
First and second-grade classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, and any small group working on
money word problems below or above grade level.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
A money-word-problem practice set with the record-keeping around it. It is not a full math
curriculum, not a timed fluency probe, and not a claim about any student's age, grade level or rate
of progress. The tracker has a blank line for your own scoring criteria.
