About this resource

6 x 40 is not "6 x 4 and add a zero" to a child who has not seen why. This is a complete kit for one skill: multiplying by multiples of 10. Children see the tens as drawn rods, do the basic fact first, then put the zeros back. They find the pattern in the zeros, solve pages of problems with a work room, check work that is right or wrong, solve six word problems and cut and paste. It comes with answer keys, a tracker, a class grid and a family page, so nothing has to be written from scratch.

EVERYTHING INSIDE (29 pages)

The Page Types, Easiest First

1. Look (1 dot): 6 x 40 worked with six groups of 4 tens, three short steps, a second example and one to try.

2. Count the Tens (1 dot): four problems with the rods drawn. Count the tens, then write the answer.

3. Fact Then Zeros A (1 dot): the basic fact in one box, the answer in the next.

4. Draw the Tens (2 dots): three problems with a drawing box. Draw one line for each ten, then write the numbers.

5. Fact Then Zeros B (2 dots): the fact ends in a zero, so count both zeros.

6. Find the Pattern (2 dots): three ladders. The digits stay the same and the zeros move; the child writes what stays and what changes.

7. Solve It A (2 dots): one digit times tens, half of them written tens first (60 x 7), with a work room.

8. Solve It B (3 dots): tens times tens, with a work room.

9. Check It (3 dots): six equations. Write yes or no, and fix the wrong ones.

10. Word Problems A, B and C (2, 2 and 3 dots): two stories a page, a 1.5 inch work box each.

11. Cut and Paste, 2 pages (1 and 2 dots): paste each answer on its problem, or sort problems by the size of the answer.

One Right Answer On Every Item

Every answer is a basic fact times 10 (one digit by tens) or times 100 (tens by tens), worked out by the same code that prints the problem, never typed by hand. No pair of numbers is used on two pages. On Cut and Paste 1 the eight answers are all different, and the order of the pieces is checked so it is not in the order of the boxes.

Built For The Child Holding The Page

A big "My name" line, one short instruction, large rounded type, big answer boxes, and dots (not words or colors) to show which level a page is. Nothing on a student page is written for an adult. The rods are drawn for this file and read clearly in black and white.

Type In, Or Print

The name line and every answer box are type-in fields in any PDF reader: click one, type, then save. The same goes for the tracker, the class grid, the team note and the home page. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.

Who This Is For

Elementary classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, and any teacher teaching multiplication by multiples of 10 in a math block, a center, a small group or a morning work folder. The directions are short, and the teacher can read each page aloud.

What This Is, And What It Is Not

A multiplying-by-multiples-of-10 worksheet set with the record-keeping around it. It does not cover multiplying by 100 or 1,000 as its own skill, decimals, or two-digit by two-digit multiplication with regrouping, and it is not a timed test, a screener, a clinical tool, or a claim about any student's age or rate of progress. There is no IEP goal language or eligibility wording anywhere in the file.
