About this resource
Six nursery rhyme crafts for your classroom: Humpty Dumpty, Hickory Dickory Dock, Jack and Jill, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Baa Baa Black Sheep and Hey Diddle Diddle. Each rhyme is a cut-and-glue picture puzzle with the rhyme printed on it, a glue mat, a finished model and a four-picture retell page. One print-and-go unit for PreK to 2nd grade.
Every craft works the same way, so children learn the routine once. The finished picture is cut into nine pieces, each 2.5 by 2.5 inches and edge to edge, so every cut is a straight line. The top two rows are the picture. The bottom row is the rhyme itself, printed on three pieces. Children glue each piece in its box on the glue mat, where a faint copy of the piece shows the way. Then they read the rhyme aloud with the finished picture in front of them. Every student page has a "My name" line and one short instruction with a picture.
What'S Inside
- Start Here: what is in the file, where to find each rhyme, how one craft works and a week of rhymes
- How to make it: four picture steps with one short sentence each
- 6 rhymes, five pages for each rhyme (pages 4 to 33): a finished model with the whole rhyme, the 9 pieces ready-colored, the 9 pieces in black and white to color, a glue mat, and a retell page
- 54 ready-colored puzzle pieces and 54 black-and-white puzzle pieces in all (9 for each rhyme in each version)
- Retell pages: 6 picture cards to cut for each rhyme, 4 that tell the story and 2 that belong to other rhymes, glued in order in 4 boxes marked First, Next, Then and Last, with a line to write one word for each picture
- My favorite rhyme: writing on three levels, trace and draw, finish the sentences from a word bank, or write about your favorite part
- A class page with a retell answer key for all six rhymes, a family letter and a credits page
39 pages in all, 34 of them for students.
The Six Rhymes
Humpty Dumpty on his wall. Hickory Dickory Dock with a mouse running up a tall clock. Jack and Jill climbing the hill with a pail. Twinkle Twinkle Little Star with a big smiling star in a night sky. Baa Baa Black Sheep with three bags of wool. Hey Diddle Diddle with the cat and the fiddle, the cow over the moon, the little dog laughing and the dish and the spoon. The rhymes are the traditional versions and are in the public domain. All pictures are our own drawings.
Cutting Built For Small Hands
Puzzle pieces are 2.5 by 2.5 inches and sit edge to edge on a dashed cut line, nine to a page. Retell cards are 2.4 by 1.8 inches, six to a page, and the glue boxes are exactly the same size as the cards. Use the ready-colored pieces to get going quickly, or the black-and-white pieces for children who want to color first. You will need scissors, a glue stick, crayons and pencils. No laminating needed.
Three Skill Levels
A small shape beside the name line marks each leveled writing page (circle, square or triangle). Easier: trace and draw (circle). Harder: finish two sentences from a word bank (square), or write about your favorite part of a rhyme and why you like it (triangle).
Who This Is For
PreK to 2nd grade classrooms, self-contained special education classrooms, circle time and literacy centers, and paraprofessionals who want rhyme crafts with a retell step attached, ready to print.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
A printable PDF (print and cut). It is not Google Slides, Docs or PowerPoint, and it has no fillable fields. It does not score or measure anything, and it makes no claim about any student's age or rate of progress.
