About this resource
Patterns on pages a child can pick up and start. See a pattern, say it, name it (AB, AAB, ABB or ABC), circle what comes next, draw the next shapes, copy a pattern, fix a wrong shape, or cut and glue. Every page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction, and big shapes with room to work. Every shape in a pattern is different in shape and in color, so a child can go by either one. Untimed: no clock, no score on the page.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (35 pages: 19 student pages, 16 for you)
- 89 practice items on 17 scored student pages, plus Look Together and Draw Your Own; 83 different patterns (28 AB, 19 AAB, 17 ABB, 19 ABC), and no practice pattern repeats, even in other colors
- Look Together: AB, AAB, ABB and ABC on four cards, with the part that repeats marked and a "say it out loud" strip (1 page)
- What Comes Next: a row with a ? box; circle the shape that comes next, one of three; AB, then AAB and ABB, then ABC and mixed patterns (18 items, 3 pages)
- Finish the Row: draw the next 2 or 3 shapes in empty boxes (15 items, 3 pages)
- Copy the Pattern: color the outline shapes to match, then draw the same pattern under it (12 items, 3 pages)
- Name the Pattern: circle the name, first one of two and then one of four, then write a letter under each shape (16 items, 3 pages)
- Fix It: one shape in the row is wrong; put an X on it, then draw the right shape (10 items, 2 pages)
- Cut and Glue: six pieces a page; finish each row with the missing shapes, glue each pattern by its name, and fill gaps in a row; 18 pieces in all, 3 pages
- Draw Your Own: make an AB, an AAB and an ABC pattern in rows of 8 boxes (3 rows, 1 page)
- A pattern guide, 2 answer keys (45 rows and 38 rows), a 17-row tracker, a class grid, a team note, a home page with three practice rows, a filled example (an invented student), a phrase and pattern-talk bank (17 starters), a binder cover and 6 divider tabs with a spine label
- Start Here, a how-it-works page and a "What's next" back page
Every Pattern Has One Right Answer
A pattern here is a core (AB, AAB, ABB or ABC) that repeats at least twice in the row shown. On What Comes Next, Finish the Row and the first Cut and Glue page, the file works out the next shapes every way the row could be read, and it will not build unless they all agree. On the last Cut and Glue page it will not build unless the empty boxes can be filled only one way from that page's shapes. On Fix It it will not build unless exactly one change, using the shapes in that row, makes the row a pattern. No two practice patterns have the same shapes.
Built For The Child, Not The Office
Every student page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction with a picture (a pencil, a circle, a book or scissors), rounded cards, and drawing and answer boxes at least half an inch tall. Everything for you (directions, answer keys, scoring) is on separate teacher pages.
Three Levels, Marked By Dots
One dot: starting (AB patterns, short rows, outlines to color). Two dots: building (AAB and ABB, drawing the shapes). Three dots: ready for more (ABC, mixed patterns, writing a letter under every shape). The dots are the only level code, so children at one table are not comparing papers.
Cutting That Is Easy
Cut and Glue A and C have six pieces in a 3 by 2 block, three straight cuts, no gaps, every piece 1.15 inches square. Cut and Glue B has six pieces in a 2 by 3 block, three straight cuts, each 2.8 by 1.1 inches. No piece sits under its own kind of box on the cut page, so cutting straight across and gluing straight down never gives the answers.
Type In, Or Print
The name and date lines, the letter boxes on Name the Pattern C, the tracker, class grid, team note and home page are type-in fields in any PDF reader; the shapes and cut pieces are always printed. Every page also prints clean in black and white, and because no two shapes in a pattern look alike, a photocopy loses nothing. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides, Google Docs or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
Kindergarten and first grade teachers, special education and resource room teachers, interventionists, and anyone who needs pattern practice at more than one level in one file, with the tracking and family pages already made.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
An untimed practice set on repeating patterns, with the record-keeping around it. It is not a timed probe or a goal page, not a full math curriculum, and not a claim about any student's age, grade level or rate of progress. Patterns are AB, AAB, ABB and ABC only, made of shapes; there are no number patterns and no growing patterns.
