About this resource
A place value chart works when a child can build the number, write it, and read it back. This is 41 pages: a color-coded wall chart, digit-card mats, student charts to 99, 999 and 9,999, read-the-chart pages, a what-is-each-digit-worth page, blank charts, and header cards, digit cards and number cards to cut. Print what you need, or type into the pages first.
WHAT IS INCLUDED (41 pages)
- 2 wall chart pages (color and ink-saver): thousands, hundreds, tens and ones in four colors, one worked number (6,347) with each digit's value and the number in words, and three "10 make 1" boxes along the bottom.
- 6 digit-card mats (to 99, to 999 and to 9,999, each in color and in ink-saver): a big slot for a digit card in every place, a space to show it or draw it, and lines for "My number" and "In words".
- 6 student charts, 3 ranges in color and in ink-saver: a chart to 99 (tens and ones), a chart to 999 and a chart to 9,999. Row 1 is done as a model, 8 numbers to try and one row where the child picks the number.
- 2 read-the-chart pages (to 999 and to 9,999): the digits are in the boxes and the child writes the number.
- A what-is-each-digit-worth sheet: the child writes the value of each digit in 6 numbers, with a space to write one number in words.
- 3 blank charts to 9,999: color, ink-saver, and one where you type your own place names in the header boxes. 10 rows on each.
- 144 pieces to cut on 9 cut sheets, edge to edge so each cut is one straight line: 8 header cards a sheet (4 places, twice; color and ink-saver), 20 digit cards a sheet (0 to 9 in each place color; 40 digit cards, also in ink-saver) and 3 sheets of 16 number cards (two-digit, three-digit and four-digit; 48 number cards).
- 46 numbered rows across the student charts, the read pages and the value page.
- Teacher pages: how to use it in 6 short routines, 2 answer keys, a tracker with a roll-up, a filled example (an invented child), a note home, and a phrase bank of 20 starters in 5 groups.
- A What's Next page, terms of use and a thank-you page.
How To Use It
Post the wall chart. A child picks a number card, puts a digit card in each place on a mat and reads the number aloud. Then the child writes the digits in a student chart, and later reads a chart back. Use a blank chart for any number you pick. The tracker shows who is ready for the next range.
Built For The Child Holding The Page
Every student page has a big "My name" line, one short direction with a picture, and large boxes to write in. Each place keeps the same color on every page. Everything reads in black and white too, and the wall chart, mats, student charts, blank chart, header cards and digit cards come in an ink-saver set.
Type In, Or Print
The name lines, the student chart boxes, the blank charts, the number lines on the mats, the tracker, the note home and every notes area are type-in fields in any PDF reader. The wall chart and the cut cards are print pages. You can also print any page and write by hand. Print at 100 percent with fit-to-page turned off. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
1st to 4th grade classrooms, resource rooms and small groups, and anyone who wants a place value chart children use with their hands first and then write on.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
Classroom charts, cards and working paper for whole numbers to 9,999. It is not a curriculum or a standards-aligned program, and it makes no health claims. It has no base-ten block pictures and no decimals. Your school decides its own next steps; the pages leave a blank for them in your own words.
