About this resource
A book companion for a PreK, kindergarten or self-contained class to use after reading the picture book. Children put the animals in the order they appear in the book: they cut picture cards and word cards, glue the pictures in order at three levels, trace the animal names, number and glue a story strip, retell the story, write about what they hear, and build a polar bear. Every student page has one short instruction with a picture, so a paraprofessional can run the table from the page itself.
This resource is made for use with the picture book *Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear?* The book is not included. This resource is not affiliated with or endorsed by the author, illustrator or publisher of the book. The pictures, word cards, sound words and pages are original to Bright Path Sped; the only things taken from the book are the animals and the order they come in.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (18 pages)
- 1 Start Here page: what is inside, a five-day plan (one activity a day), the three levels and prep
- The animals in order on one teacher page: 12 numbered pictures (10 animals, the zookeeper and the children), each with a sound word, which also serves as the answer key
- 12 picture cards to cut on one page, in mixed order, 2.5 by 1.8 inches each
- 12 word cards to cut on one page, as short strips (polar bear, lion, hippopotamus, flamingo, zebra, boa constrictor, elephant, leopard, peacock, walrus, zookeeper, children), in mixed order, plus a short writing space under the cards. The strips fit the 10 word boxes under the pictures on the first two glue-in-order pages (4 on the first, 6 on the second)
- 3 glue-in-order pages at three levels: 4 animals (a faint picture in each box shows where each card goes), 6 animals, and all 12, with 22 numbered picture boxes in all, plus 10 word boxes under the pictures on the first two levels
- 1 trace-the-word page: 12 pictures, each with the word to trace and a line to write it
- 1 cut-and-number page: 12 pieces to number 1 to 12, cut, and glue in order on a strip of paper
- 1 retell-and-write page: First, Next, Then, Last, each with a drawing box and two writing lines
- 2 writing pages: I hear a ... (a word bank of 12 pictures and words, 4 sentences to finish with a drawing box each) and What do you hear? (draw it, then finish I hear and It sounds like)
- 2 craft pages: a polar bear made of 6 pieces (head, body, 2 arms, 2 legs) with 6 glue targets the same size as the pieces, and the 6 pieces to cut out and glue together, with the finished model shown
- 1 Who Did What This Week class data page with an answer key for all 12 cards
- 1 family letter with a what-do-you-hear-at-home activity
- 1 credits page
Three Levels, Marked With Shapes
The glue-in-order task comes at three levels, marked with a circle, a square and a triangle instead of a number, so children at one table are not comparing papers: starting (4 animals, a faint picture shows where each card goes), building (6 animals, numbered boxes), ready for more (all 12 cards, numbered boxes). All three levels use the same cut cards, so a child can move up a level without new cutting.
Cutting Built For Small Hands
There are 4 cutting pages with 42 pieces in all (12 picture cards, 12 word cards, 12 cut-and-number pieces and 6 craft pieces). Every piece sits edge to edge in a grid, so each cut is one straight line, and the smallest piece (a word card) is 0.9 inches on its short side. The craft's glue targets are the same size as the pieces.
Prep
Print, then cut. You need scissors, glue sticks and crayons. Print the picture cards and word cards on card stock if you want them to last; everything else works on paper.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
A print-and-cut PDF. It is not a fillable PDF and it is not Google Slides or a PowerPoint file. Most of the animal pictures are Whimsy Clips art; the polar bear, the leopard and the peacock are drawn for this unit in the same bold-outline style, and the fonts are KA Fonts. The file is secured so the art cannot be lifted out of it. The sound words (growl, roar, snort and so on) are our own choices, not taken from the book, so use the ones your class prefers.
Who This Is For
PreK, kindergarten and 1st grade teachers, and any special education teacher setting up a book week for a self-contained or resource room with sequencing, cutting and gluing, tracing and writing, and craft stations that need no prep beyond cutting.
How To Use It
Day 1, read the book, look at the animals in order and cut the cards. Day 2, glue in order at each child's level and trace the words. Day 3, number and glue the story strip. Day 4, retell and write. Day 5, build the polar bear.
