About this resource
Looking for Pythagorean theorem notes students can actually write on? This is a complete guided-notes unit for grades 8-9, laid out with real room to show steps. It starts with a steps page that draws a right triangle with a square built on each side, names the legs and the hypotenuse, and shows how to find the hypotenuse, how to find a missing leg, how to round when the answer is not a whole number, and how to test whether a triangle is a right triangle. Two worked examples (one finding the hypotenuse, one finding a leg) each come with a guided copy where students fill in the blanks. Then come a page that names the sides on triangles turned in four different positions, a squares-on-the-sides page, three practice sets, a right-triangle test, a page of invented student work with a mistake to find, word problems, exit tickets and a cut-and-paste match. The answer keys show every square, so a student's work is easy to read at a glance.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (25 pages)
- 13 student pages, in 10 different types, each with a name line and one short instruction
- 48 scored items across 10 scored sheets, every answer computed by program from the same numbers that print on the page
- 1 steps page with the squares on the sides drawn, the formula, and four filled examples
- 2 worked examples (find the hypotenuse, find a leg), each with a guided copy for students to fill in
- Four triangles in different positions: name the legs and the hypotenuse
- 1 squares-on-the-sides page: 4 triangles, find each square's area, add, then find c
- 18 find-a-side problems in 3 sets of 6: hypotenuse, a missing leg, and answers rounded to the tenth
- 6 right-triangle tests (the converse): square the sides and decide
- 4 Find the Mistake problems (an invented student's work, one mistake each)
- 3 word problems: draw the triangle, find the side, write the answer with units
- 3 exit tickets with a "how sure am I" check
- 6 cut-and-paste pieces on 1 match mat (a pair of legs into the box with the matching hypotenuse)
- 3 answer keys; 1 tracker, 1 class grid, 1 team note
- 1 filled example (an invented student), 1 phrase bank (17 starters in 6 groups)
- Start Here page, with a "which page for which job" table
How To Use It
Teach with page 4 and the two worked examples, then hand out one practice page at a time. The Name the Sides page works well as a warm-up, the right-triangle test is a quick check before the practice sets, and the exit tickets close a lesson. The keys and records are on separate teacher pages.
Built For The Student Holding The Page
A "My name" line, one short instruction with a small picture cue, and a plain scalloped border. Nothing on a student page is written for an adult. Work boxes sit on every practice problem. The triangles and the squares on the sides are drawn on the page; clip art is kept to a lightbulb, a question mark and a pencil. The file prints clean in black and white.
Invented Examples
Every triangle, story and student is made up for practice and says so. The filled example names an invented student.
Type In, Or Print
The name line, every answer box, every check box and every ruled work box are type-in fields in any PDF reader: click one, type, then save. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
A Pythagorean theorem practice unit with the record-keeping around it. It is not a timed test, a screener, a clinical tool, or a claim about any student's age or rate of progress. There is no IEP goal language or eligibility wording anywhere in the file.
