About this resource

A line of dialogue is not finished until the quotation marks are in the right place. Children learn this best when they meet it one job at a time: spot the version that is marked right, draw the two marks, read where the speaker's name sits, sort by whether the marks are there at all, then write the whole line themselves. This is a full quotation-marks-and-dialogue kit for second grade, with primary handwriting lines and room to work on every writing page.

EVERYTHING INSIDE (36 pages)

THE EIGHT PAGE TYPES (dots show the level, never color)

1. Marks and Tags Helper (1 dot) — the rule on six cards in kid words: marks come in pairs, name-first vs. name-last, and the end mark stays inside.

2. Quoted or Not? (1 dot, 3 pages) — two printed versions of one line; the child circles the one with the marks placed right.

3. Add the Marks (2 dots, 3 pages) — the spoken words are underlined with no marks at all; the child draws the opening and closing quotation mark in the two boxes.

4. Before or After? (2 dots, 3 pages) — read the line, circle whether the speaker's name comes before or after the quoted words.

5. Sort: Quoted or Not (2 dots, 3 pages) — cut six lines from a 3 by 2 block (three straight cuts) and glue each under Has Quotation Marks or Missing Quotation Marks.

6. Write It Right (3 dots, 3 pages) — the line with no marks at all; the child writes it right on a full-width primary-lines box, then checks it off.

7. Fix the Dialogue (3 dots, 2 pages) — a four-line back-and-forth between two invented kids; the child writes each line right.

8. My Sentences (3 dots, 1 page) — a friend who just saw a rainbow, a classmate who lost a mitten: write what they might say, with the marks, and draw it.

Lines come in three sets of six (A, B, C), so a child never meets the same line twice on one page type.

Built For The Child Holding The Page

A big "My name" line, one short instruction, large rounded letters, and writing boxes on primary lines at least 0.65 inch tall. Nothing on a student page is written for an adult. Cutting is limited to Sort: Quoted or Not: six pieces a page, touching edge to edge, each wider than 2 inches and taller than 1.

Type In, Or Print

The name and date lines, the tracker, the class grid, the team note, the home page and the rules-page note box are type-in fields in any PDF reader. The letters and marks a student writes are pencil work. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.

Who This Is For

Second grade classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, and any teacher working with an older student who still needs quotation marks around dialogue. The home page sends the same job to a family; the team note hands off what changed since the last meeting.
