About this resource

Ask a student to answer a question about a story and the answer often arrives in one rushed sentence. The RACES strategy gives the answer a shape: Restate the question, Answer it, Cite words from the text, Explain how they prove it, Sum up. This is a set of RACES writing strategy worksheets for 3rd through 5th grade that walks a student through those five parts with a guide, an organizer, sentence starters, three short stories and a cut-and-glue sort.

EVERYTHING INSIDE (23 pages)

Built For The Student Holding The Page

A "My name" line, one short instruction on every page, big letters for R, A, C, E and S, and plenty of room to write. Nothing on a student page is written for an adult, and nothing is scored. The sort needs five cuts, and the pieces touch edge to edge.

Type In, Or Print

The name and date lines, every ruled line, the log, class grid and family note are type-in fields in any PDF reader, so you can type a question or a starter onto a page before you print. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.

Who This Is For

3rd through 5th grade classrooms, resource rooms, writing centers, small groups and tutors who want a clear routine for short written answers. Your district's own writing expectations decide what counts as a complete answer.

What This Is, And What It Is Not

Practice pages for the RACES steps, with the record-keeping around them. There is no scoring and no rubric, and it is not a test, a screener or a clinical tool. It makes no claim about any student's grade level or rate of progress, and there is no IEP goal language anywhere in the file.
