About this resource
Rows go across. Columns go up and down. Children mix them up all year, and a wall poster they can read from their seat is the first fix. This is a 37-page Rows and Columns Poster set: a crossword-style wall poster where the word ROWS runs across and the word COLUMNS runs down, a full-page ROWS poster, a full-page COLUMNS poster, a labeled grid, desk cards and array cards to cut, student pages and the teacher pages to run it. Print what you need, or type into the pages first.
WHAT IS INCLUDED (37 pages)
- 14 poster pages: the crossword poster (ROWS across, COLUMNS down, crossing on the O, with arrows), a full-page ROWS poster and a full-page COLUMNS poster, each in 3 color styles (Bright, Rainbow, Cool) and an ink-saver set, plus a labeled 3 x 4 grid poster in color and in ink-saver. The grid poster shows row 1 to row 3 and column 1 to column 4 with arrows, one row and one column filled in, and the square where they cross.
- 48 pieces to cut on 5 cut sheets, set edge to edge so each cut is one straight line: 16 desk cards (8 in color, 8 in ink-saver; "Rows go across" and "Columns go down" with a small grid and an arrow), 16 array cards (2 sheets of 8, each with a dot array and two lines to write the rows and the columns) and 16 grids to sort.
- 8 student pages, each with a big "My name" line, one short direction and room to work: Row or Column (circle one, 6 grids), Color a Row and a Column (a numbered grid to color), Write the Array with the row and column numbers shown (the first box is done as a model), Write the Array with no numbers, Draw the Array (4 prompts with a dot lattice to help), a sort mat with a ROWS box and a COLUMNS box, the 16 grids to cut and glue, and Find Them in Our Room (draw a row and a column).
- Two levels on the writing pages: numbers shown (page 25) and no numbers (page 26), marked with small shapes, not numbers.
- Teacher pages: Start Here with a which-page-when table, how to teach it in 5 short routines, a filled example (an invented child and every answer invented), a key for the student pages, a key for the 16 array cards, a note home, a phrase bank of 20 starters in 5 groups, and a binder cover with spine and 4 tabs.
- Terms of use and a thank-you page.
How To Use It
Hang a crossword poster and the ROWS and COLUMNS posters where everyone can see them. Sweep your arm side to side for rows and up and down for columns while children copy you. Hand out desk cards, then array cards: children count the rows, count the columns and write both. Use the student pages for practice and the key to check them. The note home asks families to look for a row and a column too.
Built For The Child Holding The Page
Every student page has a big "My name" line, one short direction with a picture, and room to circle, color, write or draw. Squares, dots, letter tiles and arrows are big and plain. The wall posters come in color and in an ink-saver set, and every page reads in black and white too.
Type In, Or Print
The name lines, the answer lines on the array cards and student pages, the note home and every notes area are type-in fields in any PDF reader. The posters are print pages. You can also print any page and write by hand. Print at 100 percent with fit-to-page turned off. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
PreK to 4th grade classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, and anyone who wants a rows and columns wall poster and practice that children can see, touch and check for themselves.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
Classroom posters and working paper for the words "row" and "column" and for counting arrays. It is not a full math curriculum, an assessment or a therapy program, and it makes no health claims. Your school decides what a child should be able to do and when; the pages give you a blank to write your own notes.
