About this resource
A short sentence gets better when you tell more. Start with "The pig rolled." and answer a question: where? how? when? Sentence expansion practice for kindergarten, first and second graders, four steps on every page: read the sentence grow, cut and paste the details, write them from a word bank, pick the words that answer the question, and then make your own. Every page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction, and big boxes for a child's handwriting. Untimed: no clock, no score on the page.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (30 pages: 14 student pages, 16 for you)
- 12 different sentences, each a three-word kernel that gains four details (48 details in all), 130 words in the finished sentences
- Grow It: the short sentence and four steps are printed, the new part is marked in each row; read, then write the longest sentence (3 pages)
- Glue It: cut one strip of 5 big pieces (the short sentence and four details) and paste one in each row (3 pages, 15 pieces)
- Write It: a word bank of 4 details; write the one that answers each question (3 pages, 12 items)
- Pick One: a sentence with a gap and 3 choices; circle the words that answer the question (3 pages, 12 items)
- My Own: add a detail for each question, write the longest sentence, draw it (2 pages; page 1 starts from a given sentence, page 2 from the child's own)
- A sentence map, 2 answer keys, a tracker, a class grid, a team note, a home page, a filled example (an invented student), a phrase and strategy bank (17 starters), a binder cover and 6 divider tabs with a spine label
- Start Here, a how-it-works page and a "What's next" back page
Built For The Child, Not The Office
Every student page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction with a picture (a book, scissors, a pencil or a circle), rounded boxes at least half an inch tall, and plenty of room. Each cutting page is one strip of 5 pieces edge to edge, every piece at least 1.1 inches on a side, so a small hand makes as few cuts as possible. Everything for you (directions, answer keys, scoring) is on separate teacher pages.
Three Levels, Marked By Dots
One dot: starting (the sentence is printed and grows). Two dots: building (paste, write from a bank, or pick). Three dots: ready for more (write every detail yourself). The dots are the only level code, so children at one table are not comparing papers.
Every Answer Is Computed
Each key row, each wrong choice and each piece order is read from the same sentence data that draws the page. On Pick One exactly one choice answers the question word printed big in the row (the wrong choices cannot fill the gap), and where the answer sits has no pattern a child could copy. The four details are added in a different order from page to page.
Type In, Or Print
The name and date lines, every answer box, the tracker, class grid, team note and home page are type-in fields in any PDF reader; the printed sentences and cut pieces are always printed. Every page also prints clean in black and white. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides, Google Docs or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
Kindergarten to second grade teachers, special education and resource room teachers, interventionists, and anyone who wants sentence-expansion practice at more than one level in one file, with the tracking and family pages already made.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
An untimed practice set for adding detail to sentences, with the record-keeping around it. It is not a timed fluency probe or a goal page, not a full writing curriculum, and not a claim about any student's age, grade level or rate of progress.
