About this resource

A sentence grows one word at a time. Row 1 is the first word, row 2 is the first two words, and so on down to the whole sentence with its period. Sentence pyramids that kindergarten, first and second graders can read, cut and paste, write, choose the next word for, and then make their own. Every page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction, and big boxes for a child's handwriting. Untimed: no clock, no score on the page.

EVERYTHING INSIDE (33 pages: 17 student pages, 16 for you)

Built For The Child, Not The Office

Every student page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction with a picture (a book, scissors, a pencil or a circle), rounded boxes at least half an inch tall, and plenty of room. Each cutting page is one strip of tiles edge to edge, every tile at least 1.1 inches on a side, so a small hand makes as few cuts as possible. Everything for you (directions, answer keys, scoring) is on separate teacher pages.

Three Levels, Marked By Dots

One dot: starting (the whole sentence is printed to read, or the earlier words are printed in each row). Two dots: building. Three dots: ready for more (write every row yourself). The dots are the only level code, so children at one table are not comparing papers.

Every Answer Is Computed

Each key row, each wrong choice and each tile order is read from the same sentence data that draws the page. On Add a Word the two wrong choices could not come next in an English sentence. Where an answer sits has no pattern a child could copy.

Type In, Or Print

The name and date lines, every answer box, the tracker, class grid, team note and home page are type-in fields in any PDF reader; the pyramids and cut tiles are always printed. Every page also prints clean in black and white. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides, Google Docs or PowerPoint file.

Who This Is For

Kindergarten to second grade teachers, special education and resource room teachers, interventionists, and anyone who wants sentence-building practice at more than one level in one file, with the tracking and family pages already made.

What This Is, And What It Is Not

An untimed practice set for building and reading sentences, with the record-keeping around it. It is not a timed fluency probe or a goal page, not a full writing curriculum, and not a claim about any student's age, grade level or rate of progress.
