About this resource
A child who knows a sight word can read it fast, and fast comes from meeting the same small set of words again and again. This kit puts the first 100 words into groups of five and gives each group five different jobs: read it in a pyramid, build it letter by letter on stairs, write it from a number, read it inside a growing sentence, and read it again in a mixed-up order. Every student page has a big "My name" line, big rounded letters and room to write.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (61 pages)
- 45 student pages in 5 formats, each with a big "My name" line and one short instruction: four formats of 10 pages that each cover all 100 words (words 1-10 first, words 91-100 last, in the list's own order), plus 5 Fluency Stairs pages
- 100 words in 20 sets of 5; every page carries two sets
- 10 Read the Pyramid pages: 20 pyramids of 10 word bricks (rows of 1, 2, 3 and 4), every word of its set twice, never twice in one row, and a star to color at the end of each row
- 10 Build the Stairs pages: 100 stairs, one box for every letter (337 boxes), the first letter faded to trace, the child writes the rest
- 10 Write the Pyramid pages: the same pyramids as writing boxes on primary lines with a numbered Word Bank. The first time a word appears the word is faded to trace (100 boxes); the second time the box is empty and its number says which word to write (100 boxes)
- 10 Sentence Stairs pages: 20 new six-word sentences, two a page. A sentence grows one word a row, then the child writes it on primary lines
- 5 Fluency Stairs pages: 8 steps of 5 words a page, 20 words read twice each in a different order
- 1 How We Climb page that shows one example of each format before the child starts
- 1 answer key for Write the Pyramid, generated from the same data as the pages
- 1 tracker (20 sets, four formats each), 1 class progress grid (15 rows), 1 team note, 1 home page with a blank pyramid, 1 filled example (an invented student), 1 phrase bank (17 starters)
- 1 binder cover and 6 divider tabs with a spine label to cut out
- Start Here, a how-to-read-a-page page, a contents page listing all 100 words by set, and a back page
THE FIVE FORMATS (dots show the level, never color)
1. Read the Pyramid (1 dot) — read each row of bricks from the top down, then color the star.
2. Build the Stairs (2 dots) — read the word, then write one letter on each step. The two one-letter words (a and I) are a single step.
3. Write the Pyramid (2 dots) — trace the light words, write the word for each number.
4. Sentence Stairs (3 dots) — read down the stairs, then write the whole sentence.
5. Fluency Stairs (1 dot) — read each step of five words and color its star.
Built For The Child Holding The Page
A big "My name" line, one short instruction with a picture, large rounded letters, and writing boxes on primary lines at least half an inch tall on the writing pages. Nothing on a student page is written for an adult: no score, no timer, no goal. No student page needs scissors or glue; the only cutting is the divider tabs (7 pieces, all straight cuts). No picture is used for a word, so no picture can name the wrong word.
Type In, Or Print
The name and date lines, the tracker, the class grid, the team note and the home page are type-in fields in any PDF reader. The reading, tracing and writing on the student pages is pencil work. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
Kindergarten, first and second grade classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, and any teacher working with an older student who still needs the first hundred words. The home page sends the same job to a family; the team note hands off what changed since the last meeting.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
Sight word practice with the record-keeping around it, using words from a common first-100 list. It is not a probe, a goal bank or a score sheet, not a reading assessment, and not a claim about any student's age or rate of progress.
