About this resource
A weekly spelling word-work kit for kindergarten through 2nd grade: the same 12-word list
practiced three different ways — Rainbow Write (trace and copy in color), ABC Order (reorder a
mixed-up list alphabetically), and Use It in a Sentence (write with a word you can see) — plus
the record-keeping around it. This is practice, not a test: every word stays printed and visible
on every page.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (22 pages)
- 6 practice pages — 3 formats (Rainbow Write, ABC Order, Use It in a Sentence), 2 six-word sets
each (Set A and Set B), so a shorter sitting or two students working side by side is easy
- 12 words in the bank — 10 short-vowel CVC words and 2 Fry first-hundred sight words, every one
checked against a verified word list, nothing invented
- 1 generated ABC-order answer key, computed by alphabetically sorting each set's own word list —
never typed twice into a second copy — plus a worked example of breaking a tie when two words
share a first letter
- 1 practice tracker (one student, all three formats), 1 progress snapshot (a bar graph rolling
the three scores into one picture), and 1 class roll-up grid, type-in or print
- 1 team note — a progress-note page with blanks for the team's own wording
- 1 home-practice page — the same word list, sent home, with a "pick tonight's format" table
- 1 filled example — an invented student, every number checked against its own table
- 1 phrase bank — progress-note, family-note, next-step and talk-first starters
- 1 binder cover with a spine label and five divider tabs
- Start Here, a how-it-works page (with a worked rainbow-write example), a contents page, and a
word-bank page that lists every word and where it came from
Practice, Not A Hidden-Word Test
Every word is printed and visible on every page in this file. That is what makes it different
from this store's Spelling Test Paper with Sentence Dictation, where the student never sees the
word or sentence and the teacher reads it aloud to check recall from memory. Here the job is
tracing, reordering, and writing with a word already in view — never guessing it from memory.
Three Ways To Practice The Same List
Rainbow Write: the word is printed once, big, and the student copies it on three color-coded
lines, then once more in their best handwriting. ABC Order: six mixed-up words are shown in a
row, and the student writes them again in alphabetical order on numbered lines below, with a
step-by-step "how to alphabetize" card and a worked tie-breaking example on the page. Use It in a
Sentence: each word gets its own blank lines for the student to write an original sentence using
it — open-ended by design, since any sentence that uses the word correctly is right.
Type In, Or Print
The name and date lines, the tracker, the snapshot, the class grid, the team note and the home
page are type-in fields in any PDF reader; every practice page itself is pencil work, printed
clean in black and white. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides, Google Docs or
PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
Kindergarten through 2nd-grade classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, and any small group
doing weekly spelling word work below or above grade level.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
A spelling practice set with the record-keeping around it. It is not a spelling curriculum, a
required scope and sequence, or a claim about any student's age, grade level or rate of progress.
The tracker has a blank line for your own word list and your own scoring criteria.
