About this resource
Is "Where is my blue backpack?" telling or asking? Once a child can name a sentence's type, the end mark almost picks itself. This is a sentence-TYPE kit for first and second grade: statement, question or exclamation, with the matching end mark, and turning a statement into a question. Every page has a big "My name" line and one short instruction; every writing box is on primary lines.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (35 pages)
- 18 student pages in 7 page types (below), each with a big "My name" line and one short instruction
- 98 invented sentences: naming a sentence a statement, a question or an exclamation, the mark each one takes, and turning a statement into a question — no sentence repeats across the student pages
- 18 cut-and-glue sentences, six a page, in a block that takes 3 straight cuts
- 18 Turn It Around items: a statement with is/are/can/will/was, turned into a yes/no question
- 18 Write One of Each items: two topics a page, a statement, a question and an exclamation about each
- 8 Which Type Is It? sentences across two mixed four-sentence stories: write the type and the end mark for each line
- 1 about page for the teacher (with a blank line for your program's own wording) and 3 answer keys generated from the same data as the pages
- 1 tracker (17 rows), 1 class progress grid, 1 team note, 1 home page, 1 filled example (an invented student), 1 phrase bank (17 starters)
- 1 binder cover and 6 divider tabs with a spine label to cut out
- Start Here, a how-to-read-a-page page, and a back page
THE SEVEN PAGE TYPES (dots show the level, never color)
1. Helper (1 dot) — what each type does (tells / asks / shouts) and a clue for spotting it, in kid words.
2. Statement, Question, or Exclamation? (1 dot, 3 pages) — a full sentence; the child circles its type among three word buttons.
3. Sort by Type (2 dots, 3 pages) — cut six sentences from a 3 by 2 block (three straight cuts) and glue each one under Statement, Question or Exclamation.
4. Fix the End Mark (2 dots, 3 pages) — the type is given as a chip; the end mark printed is wrong; the child writes the right one in a box.
5. Turn It Around (3 dots, 3 pages) — a statement that already has is/are/can/will/was; the child writes it again as a question on primary lines.
6. Write One of Each (3 dots, 3 pages) — a topic; the child writes a statement, a question and an exclamation about it.
7. Which Type Is It? (3 dots, 2 pages) — a four-sentence mixed story with no end marks; the child writes the type and the mark for each line.
Sentences come in three sets of six (A, B, C), so a child never meets the same one twice on one page type.
Built For The Child Holding The Page
A big "My name" line, one short instruction, large rounded letters, and every writing box on Turn It Around and Write One of Each on primary lines at least 0.55 inch tall. Nothing on a student page is written for an adult. Cutting is limited to Sort by Type: six pieces a page, touching edge to edge, each wider than 2 inches and taller than 1.
Type, Then Mark
Every Fix the End Mark item gives the type and shows the WRONG mark on purpose, so the answer comes from the type, not from a guess at the mark shown. Turn It Around only uses statements that already contain is, are, can, will or was, so turning one into a question is a simple, defensible word swap — not a do/does/did rule, which this grade band is not asked for.
Type In, Or Print
The name and date lines, the tracker, the class grid, the team note, the home page and the about-page note box are type-in fields in any PDF reader. The words a student writes in the boxes are pencil work. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
First and second grade classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, and any teacher working with an older student who still mixes up a question for a statement. The home page sends the same job to a family; the team note hands off what changed since the last meeting.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
Sentence-type practice with the record-keeping around it. It is not a probe, a goal bank or a score sheet, not a writing assessment, and not a claim about any student's age or rate of progress. Commands (a fourth sentence type with no reliable end-mark rule at this grade band), compound sentences with and/but/or/so, quotation marks and capital-letter rules are not practiced here — capital letters and end marks on their own, and whether a group of words is a complete sentence, are each a separate resource from this store.
