About this resource
Blending is the moment a reader turns separate sounds into a word — and it is the step that breaks down
first for a struggling reader. This is a complete kit for practicing it, step by step, across all five
short-vowel families: three different ways to build up to a blended word, a tracker, a class grid, a
family note and a partner-practice page, so nothing has to be written from scratch.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (32 pages)
- 15 student pages in 3 formats: 5 Build It Up pages (one a vowel family, 4 words, write the cumulative
blending steps), 5 Blend and Write pages (one a family, 4 words with letters pre-split), 5 Blend Chain
pages (one a family, a 6-rung word ladder where only the first sound changes)
- 70 real short-vowel CVC words in all, every one checked against the same word list, never repeated
across formats within a vowel family
- 2 answer keys, generated from the same word lists as the student pages
- 1 tracker (first try / second try, by vowel family) and 1 whole-class progress grid
- 1 family note (a ready-to-send update) and 1 partner-practice page (an oral, 1:1 or small-group drill —
a different setting from the written worksheets)
- 1 filled example (an invented student), 1 phrase bank (14 observable-language starters), 1 binder
cover, and 5 divider tabs with a spine label to cut out
- Start Here, a how-to-read-a-page page, a contents page that gives every page number and every word
practiced, and a Meet Successive Blending reference page with a worked example
The Three Formats, Easiest To Hardest
1. Build It Up (starting) — a real CVC word is given; write the first sound, then the first two sounds,
then the whole word, one line at a time.
2. Blend and Write (building) — the word's letters are already split (s-a-t); say each sound, blend it,
and write the whole word on the line.
3. Blend Chain (ready for more) — a vertical word ladder: the first rung is already blended, and each rung
below it changes only the first sound, so every rung is a brand-new real word to blend.
Built For The Child Holding The Page
A big "My name" line, one short instruction, large rounded letters, real room to write, and dots (not
words) to show which level a page is. Nothing on a student page is written for an adult.
Every Word Is Real, And Every Example Is Invented
Every word in this file is a real short-vowel CVC word checked against the same word list — never a
nonsense syllable. The filled example names an invented student and says so on the page; nothing in the
file is a claim about any real child's reading level.
Type In, Or Print
The name and date lines, the tracker, the class grid, and the family note are type-in fields in any PDF
reader. The letters and words a student writes are pencil work. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a
Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
Kindergarten, first and second grade classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, and any teacher,
interventionist or paraprofessional running a CVC blending routine. The partner-practice page sends the
same technique to a 1:1 or small-group oral setting; the family note sends it home.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
A short-vowel CVC blending worksheet set with the record-keeping around it. It is not a screener, a
norm-referenced assessment, or a claim about any student's reading level. There is no IEP goal language
or eligibility wording anywhere in the file.
