About this resource
Everything a take home folder needs, in one fillable PDF. Three folder covers a child can put a name on, labels for the left pocket (Keep at Home) and the right pocket (Return to School), a letter that explains the folder to families, a weekly checklist, a homework and reading record, a newsletter slot, and a notes page that goes home and comes back. Written for kindergarten through fifth grade. How much homework, how much reading and which day the folder returns are blank lines for you; nothing here sets them.
WHAT IS INCLUDED — 18 pages: 3 folder covers, 6 pocket labels, a letter to families, a weekly checklist, a homework and reading record, a newsletter slot, a class notes page, 30 notes-home starters, a whole-class tracker, and a filled example
Start Here
- How This Take Home Folder Works — eleven situations, one page each, pointing straight at the page you need
- How the Type-In Fields Work — one page, so nobody emails you
- Take Home Folder Setup — class, the day the folder goes home, the day it comes back, what belongs in each pocket, and blank lines for your school's own rules
THE FOLDER ITSELF (pages a child uses)
- Folder Cover 1: My Take Home Folder — a big name line, teacher and class lines, and the two pockets pictured
- Folder Cover 2: Home and School — a name line and a large box for the child to draw a picture of themselves
- Folder Cover 3: Home and Back — three picture steps (take it home, show a grown-up, bring it back) and a name line
- Pocket Labels — six labels to cut out and tape inside the folder: three pairs, each with a left pocket (Keep at Home) and a right pocket (Return to School), worded three ways. The labels sit edge to edge in two columns, so cutting is a few straight lines.
- My Week Checklist — four rows (homework, reading, a grown-up looked, folder came back) by five day boxes, Monday to Friday, with a row of stars to color
Communication With Families
- Letter to Families About the Take Home Folder — explains the two pockets and a four-step evening routine, with blanks for your own days and wording and a space for the family to write back
- Newsletter Slot — a dates table, a place for what you are learning and what to send, and a large box to staple or tape your own newsletter
- Class Notes: Home and Back — a note from school on top, a reply from home below, and a checklist of what is in the right pocket
- Notes-Home Starters — 30 starters in six groups (good news, a reminder about the folder, homework and reading, news and dates, asking for a reply, and five questions to ask before sending a note), most ending in a blank for a name, a number or a date
What This Is, And What It Is Not
It is a fillable PDF: open it in a PDF reader, click a line or a box, type, and Save As once per class. It works offline with no account or subscription. It is not a Google Sheets file, a Google Doc, or an Excel workbook, and it does not count the week for you. It does not set a homework amount, a reading goal or a return day; those are yours or your school's to decide. It is not a contact log or a newsletter template, and nothing in it names a label, a condition or a service.
Who This Is For
Kindergarten through fifth grade classroom teachers, special education teachers and case managers who send a folder home, paraprofessionals who help children pack it, and families who want to know what goes where.
