About this resource
Children see signs on every walk, ride and trip to the store. This is 36 pages that teach them what the signs say and what they tell us: sign posters in true colors, cards to cut and match, and a sign walk to take around your school or block. Print what you need, or type into the pages first.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (36 pages)
- 16 sign posters, one big sign to a page, each with the word and one line in kid words that says what the sign tells us: Stop, Yield, Do Not Enter, School Crossing, Railroad Crossing, Speed Limit, One Way, No Parking, Crosswalk, Bike Lane, Hospital, Restroom, Bus Stop, Traffic Light, Construction and Caution.
- 1 shapes and colors poster: six rows that show how the shape of a sign gives a clue.
- 16 sign cards and 16 word cards to cut, each in color and in ink-saver: 64 pieces across four cut sheets, set edge to edge in a 4 by 4 grid so each cut is one straight line.
- 2 draw-a-line matching pages (8 signs to 8 words on each, 16 matches in all), with an answer key for the teacher.
- 2 more student pages: My Sign Walk (a checklist of all 16 signs, color a box when you see one) and I Spy a Sign (4 boxes to draw a sign, write what it says and where it was seen).
- Teacher pages: Start Here with a which-page-when chart, five short steps to teach it, a class sign-walk tally, a filled example walk (an invented class), a note to families, a phrase bank of 20 starters in 5 groups, and a binder cover with spine and 4 tabs.
- Contents, terms of use and a thank-you page.
How To Use It
Hang a few posters at a time and read the line on each one together. Cut the sign cards and word cards and let children match them; start with six signs that look very different, then add more. Take the checklist on a sign walk around the school or your block, then have each child draw one sign they spotted. Back in class, add up which signs the class found on the tally.
Built For The Child Holding The Page
Every student page has a big "My name" line, one short direction with a picture, and room to draw and write. Signs are big and drawn in true colors, so children can match what they see out the window. Cut pages come in a color set and an ink-saver set, and everything reads in black and white too.
Type In, Or Print
The name lines, the I-spy page, the class tally, the family note and every notes area are type-in fields in any PDF reader. You can also print any page and write by hand. Print at 100 percent with fit-to-page turned off. This is a fillable PDF; it is not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
PreK to 2nd grade classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, community and life skills units, paraprofessionals, substitutes, and families who want to practice the same signs at home.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
Classroom posters, cards and working paper for learning what common signs look like and say. The signs are drawn for teaching and can look a little different from the ones where you live, so the file suggests walking your own streets and comparing. It is not a driving, safety or pedestrian training program, and it sets no rules: your school and your family decide those, and the family note has blanks to write them.
