About this resource
Two-digit addition and subtraction both have a step the easier worksheets skip: trading ten ones for a ten when
adding, and trading a ten back for ten ones when subtracting. This is a full kit for exactly that step — six kinds
of student page, every single problem built so it REQUIRES the trade, with the trade itself drawn, not just
computed. Every page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction and answer boxes a young child can write in.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (35 pages)
- 19 student pages: 16 practice pages in 6 formats, plus a Trading Chart and two worked "Look" pages (one for
adding, one for subtracting)
- 79 two-digit problems, no two alike within an operation, every one of them forced to regroup; answers from 1 to
96
- 12 cut-and-glue pieces in 2 sets of 6 (three straight cuts a page) and 16 tiles to solve and color in 2 grids
- 3 answer keys, made from the same data as the pages
- 1 tracker (16 pages, 79 items), 1 class progress grid
- 1 team note and 1 home page (practice boxes and a "say it out loud" card for a family to use)
- 1 filled example (an invented student), 1 strategy bank (14 starters and a worked example said out loud), 1
binder cover and 6 divider tabs with a spine label to cut out
- Start Here, a how-to-read-a-page page, and a "what's next" back page
The Six Formats
1. Trade and Add (3 pages, 12 problems): add the ones, trade ten ones for a new ten, write it in the small regroup
box, then add the tens. The first two sets keep the regroup box; the last drops every scaffold.
2. Trade and Subtract (3 pages, 12 problems): trade a ten for ten ones, write what is left in the small regroup
box, then subtract.
3. Mixed Practice (3 pages, 18 problems, 9 addition and 9 subtraction): read the sign, then add or subtract and
trade as needed — no page is all one operation.
4. Story Problems (3 pages, 9 problems, 6 addition and 3 subtraction): a short story with a drawn object, a "My
work" box, and a number sentence to write.
5. Cut and Glue (2 pages, 12 pieces): match problems to their answers, or answers to their problems. Six pieces a
page in a 3 by 2 block, every piece touching its neighbors.
6. Solve and Color (2 pages, 16 tiles): solve the problem on each tile, then color it using the key at the top
(four colors, two tiles a color).
Dots at the top right of each page (not words) show the level: one dot starting, two building, three ready for
more.
Regrouping, On Purpose, Both Ways
On every addition problem in the file the ones digits add to 10 or more, so the ones always carry; on every
subtraction problem the minuend's ones digit is smaller than the subtrahend's, so the ones always borrow. Both are
checked in code for every problem, and every plain block picture is checked too: the rods drawn equal the tens
digit and the cubes drawn equal the ones digit of the number it draws.
Built For The Child Holding The Page
A big "My name" line, one short instruction with a picture, large rounded numbers and boxes at least 0.42 in tall.
Nothing on a student page is written for an adult. The rods, cubes and story pictures are all drawn by us; there
are no scores and no timers on the student pages.
Type In, Or Print
The name and date lines, the answer boxes, the tracker, the class grid, the team note and the home page are
type-in fields in any PDF reader. Every page also prints cleanly in black and white. This is a fillable PDF; it is
not a Google Slides or PowerPoint file.
Who This Is For
Second grade classrooms, self-contained and resource rooms, and any teacher working with an older student who
still needs the trade modeled with blocks. The home page sends the same job to a family; the team note hands off
what changed since the last meeting.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
Addition and subtraction regrouping practice with the record-keeping around it. It is not a probe, a goal bank or
a timed score sheet, and it makes no claim about any student's age or rate of progress.
