About this resource
Looking for Valentines Day fractions your second, third and fourth graders can actually color, cut and glue? This set has 14 student sheets built around one big picture: a heart cut into equal parts. Students shade a heart to match a fraction, count the colored parts and write the fraction, find hearts cut two ways that show the same amount, compare two hearts, color a heart by equal fractions, and cut and glue each fraction by its heart. Every page has a big "My name" line, one short instruction with a small picture, big hearts and big boxes to write in. Print and go: students color with a crayon, and the number boxes can be typed into on screen.
EVERYTHING INSIDE (28 pages)
- 1 reading page: a heart cut in halves and a heart cut in fourths read as a fraction and in words, then one heart to read (5 of 8)
- 2 shade sheets, 6 hearts each: halves, thirds and fourths; sixths and eighths
- 3 name-the-fraction sheets, 6 hearts each: halves, thirds and fourths with the bottom number printed; sixths and eighths with the bottom number printed; a mixed sheet where students write both numbers
- 1 same-amount sheet (5 problems): a heart cut one way beside a heart cut another way, with the top number to fill in
- 2 compare sheets: 4 pairs of hearts with the symbol to write, and 4 pairs where students write each fraction first
- 1 color-by-equal-fractions heart: 12 equal-area parts, each labeled with a fraction, and a color key for 5 fractions (one half, one third, one fourth, two thirds, three fourths)
- 2 cut-and-glue sheets, 6 hearts each: students glue the fraction by its heart, then the fraction that shows the same amount. The 6 pieces sit edge to edge in one strip, so each cut is one straight line, and each glue box is the size of a piece
- A blank-hearts sheet with 6 hearts (cut into halves, thirds, fourths, sixths and eighths twice) to color and write, and a words sheet with 12 words and 6 sentence frames
- 2 answer-key pages, a tracker with a roll-up graph (10 scored sheets, 55 problems), a filled example (an invented student), a family page, a binder cover with a spine strip, 3 divider tabs, a Start Here page and a What's Next page
Three Levels
A small shape in the top corner of each of 11 student sheets tells you the level: a circle (2 sheets) is starting, with halves, thirds and fourths; a square (5 sheets) is building, with sixths and eighths, same amount, comparing hearts and cut-and-glue; a triangle (4 sheets) is ready for more, with both numbers to write, compare and write, color by equal fractions and cut-and-glue the same amount. The reading page, the blank hearts and the words page carry no level shape.
How It Works
1. Pick a section: shade and name, same amount and compare, or cut, glue and make your own.
2. Print a page and hand it over. One short instruction, one job. Students color the parts, then write in the boxes.
3. Check with the key, write the date and score on the tracker, and color the roll-up column.
Built For The Child Holding The Page
A big "My name" line, big print, hearts big enough to color, and room to write. Nothing on a student page is written for an adult; the keys, tracker and notes are on separate teacher pages. All names and numbers on the practice sheets are made up. Every heart is drawn by code and cut into vertical bands of equal area (each band is measured and the bands match within half a percent), every colored part is counted back out of the drawing and checked against its fraction, every same-amount pair and compare answer is worked out two ways, and every answer in the key comes from the same numbers as its page.
What This Is, And What It Is Not
Who This Is For
Second, third and fourth grade teachers, interventionists, special education teachers and families who want a February fractions activity that is more than a color page: halves to eighths, equal parts, same amount and comparing.
